Announcement: Nintendo Switch 2 Edition & Free Update

I was just wondering, since we're able to change the date of your switch, im guessing the update wouldnt happen if you do that right?
Not saying I want to get the update right now, but if people tried to change their switch date, thinking they could get the update earlier.
It wouldn't, no. You would need all of the software files for the update downloaded. Typically, the software files are either a) downloaded at the time the content is officially released, or b) the software files can be partially downloaded prior to release, but at the official release there is a much smaller update that needs to be downloaded to unlock the content. 😊

If you were to time travel now to January it would be like if you TT'ed during 2020 when we were waiting on content. It wouldn't be there and in that case even the holidays were timelocked. So we would have to wait for Nintendo to 'flip the switch' so we can have the content.

Anyone else seriously thinking about restarting their island when the new update comes out!?

Also does this mean there will be an updated Complete Guide!?
I thought about it, but after all the hard work I put into my 3rd island (yes, I have made a 3rd one, thanks to the Switch 2, while I still have my Original Switch and Switch Lite), I don't see myself doing it. Those slumber islands that they announced in the Dream Suite I will take advantage of because sometimes I want to try out new items while at the same thing not losing all of my progress. I remember how, back in the day, it took me hours and weeks to carry over all of my progress to my other island so that I could restart the process on my old island. It was a long and tedious thing, and eventually I got tired of it. The only feature that may convince me to do a proper restart is if they bring back the feature where, if you can sell your island to Tom Nook, he can give all the bells back to pay off your loan quicker when you start over. That was a thing in New Leaf Welcome Amiibo. Anyways, I do like the idea that they are letting you do what you want on the slumber islands (would've been nice if this was a thing since day one, but I digress)

If my catalogues on my main island wasn’t so close to being finished, I’d consider it since I’m not really happy with it. I’ve been considering it for my second island since I keep dropping it for lengthy periods of time and could use a fresh start but I already put so much work into my second island and the journal. I don’t think I will though, considering how much work it will be and how long the tutorial is.

Restarting fresh just takes too much work (unlocking things, getting the desired villagers, catalog, etc).

So I’m waiting for the Slumber update so I can design new islands without all the hassle.
Not to mention you can invite your friends (which I have no one by myself, so I'll have to ask myself and other self to design the island) to help you create your island, which I can imagine is going to be pretty chaotic, like if you wanted to go for a theme you wish to. Still, your friends decided they wanted something that you didn't ask for. That will be both chaotic and interesting to see how it works out.

Okay, please tell me if I am not the only one who feels this way, but I need to get this off my chest. I've been thinking too hard about this, and it's driving me up the wall, so let me say what I want to say. I feel gaslighted by Nintendo because, listen, they literally said back in November 2021 that the 2.0 update was the "Last" and "Only" update for the game.

They must've done this on purpose because they see how many people are still enjoying ACNH, and instead of announcing a brand new game, they go, "You know what, maybe we should've updated this game a long time ago. The next AC can wait longer, and we can give them something to keep them occupied."

I must be going crazy trying to wrap my mind around why they took so long to announce the update and why now? It has something to do with the Switch 2, as if they are testing the waters of what works in ACNH and what they can do to carry over and improve on in the next AC game. That's the only explanation I can think of.

Why is that a bad thing?
It’s not that experimenting for the next game is bad, I actually think it’s smart. What threw me off is that back in 2021, Nintendo outright said 2.0 was the final update. So, when they suddenly started adding new features again years later, it made me feel like we had been misled for a really long time. I’m trying to process that shift, that’s what I was talking about.

Wow, I definitely wasn't expecting New Horizons to get a Switch 2 edition after it wasn't included in the initial set of games that were getting one, so this is a pleasant surprise! While I'm not sure how worthwhile it is for me, I've decided to pre-order the upgrade pack since it's cheap enough, even if I wish it was bundled with NSO+EP like the Happy Home Paradise DLC. The mouse functionality could be useful, plus it'd be fun to have 12 player Hide and Seek sessions in the future depending on how many people here pick it up!

As for update 3.0, there's a lot I like from it! The resort hotel is interesting, basically like a free version of HHP in a sense. I'm glad that we're getting even more furniture to play around with, especially the special items for Nintendo, Lego, Zelda, and Splatoon. I'm really looking forward to having my island rep wear Majora's Mask assuming it's the same as New Leaf, lol. Hopefully this opens the door to even more Nintendo franchises getting some special furniture (mainly Pikmin and Metroid for me, lol). I'm definitely thankful they finally put in some QoL features with bulk crafting and quick clean-up with Resetti, definitely long overdue. The increased storage and being able to store basically everything now is also fun. I really like the addition of slumber islands and that you can have multiple people work together on one island. Obviously we (the staff) will need to get a better understanding of them first, but I'll be interested to see if/how we can utilize them in any future events.

Overall, it was a really good announcement, definitely can't complain about something that nobody would have expected 4 years ago. I'm looking forward to using it as an excuse to play New Horizons again next year! As well, I'll definitely be interested to see if there ends up being more updates (i.e. adding items for more Nintendo franchises, as I mentioned above) after this. As for where this leaves a new main series Animal Crossing game, I imagine the clock gets pushed back a bit on it. I can't see them doing this if they weren't trying to buy some time for it, so maybe instead of it coming out in 2027 like I was expecting, it happens in 2028 at the earliest? I also feel like it means whatever we get won't be a New Horizons 2, so to speak, but will have its own separate identity to encourage people to buy it instead of sticking with NH.

They've added many things we've been asking for, but I hope they shorten Easter week, or add in the old furniture.
It would be nice if it was a day like every other game or a weekend. It made playing a pain during that week.

Maybe this new update will do what WA did and let you sell back your island for a sizeable sum by Nook and then carry over everything like it did in NL. I think it carried over the catalogue and other stuff right?

I wonder if they'll do reprints of the amiibo cards and amiibo figurines from this. And if they'll have a reprint of the RV trailer villagers.

I do not own a Nintendo Switch 2 game console.

I have not been playing Animal Crossing: New Horizons lately.

I don’t mind mentioning that I am tired from having played Animal Crossing: New Leaf, from August 2013 to March 2020, and New Horizons since its launch on March 20, 2020.

I am on break.

I also have refrained from purchasing Nintendo Switch 2 as I consider the pros and cons.

What I will do, come January 2026, is check out gaming content creators handling and playing this 3.0 update. It will give me more information. Likewise this website, its discussion board, and its forum members (who are generous).

Now that November has arrived: As we are drawing to a close the year 2025…I wish every person a safe and enjoyable holiday period.

I was am so excited to be able to craft from
storage. Looks like we might also be able to switch from crafting to customizing without having to exit and go back.

worst update ever if they dont add the ability to drink sparkling cider!!!

but seriously, very cool to see this game updated after all this time!! very stoked to see bulk crafting and that you can do so directly from storage rather than it being a requirement to have things in hand. been used to that in other games so it's nice to see this one finally do that. also loving the new items we've seen so far and yeah, excited to try out the other new features when the time comes!

Pretty neat, but the biggest thing to kme is that this pretty much confirms that we're not getting a new AC game in a while, since the team has probably been busy with this for the past few months. I don't mind more waiting at all, if it means a more properly finished game
