I can deal with pretty much every single issue in the game right now. I'm confident Nintendo is hard at work improving it - it's the best selling Switch game right now, and they know they can't miss this chance to make it even better. But the waterfalls are too loud.

Just because you had a bad experience with time travelling doesn't mean everyone else will have a bad experience, too. People are free to play the game in the way they find most enjoyable, and it's not your business to decide for them.

I didn't mean they could leave without speaking to you. However, if you ignore them completely (up until they have thought bubbles and ask you if they should leave), they'll move quicker. It's the same method @Altarium used, and it's not random.
