Gaming Pet Peeves

I hope I can remember all mine:

- My biggest one is I hate needing to find an item or location to save my progress so I can log off, seriously who on earth thought this was a good idea?! Like come on I'm done playing let me save whenever I want don't make me hunt down a save item so I can log off already
- Big confusing places that make me get lost for hours and I need to go watch a walkthrough to find out where I'm going
- Recycled dialog, just no-
- Super long credits that I can't skip or speed up
- Side/helper characters that pretend they are gonna help me when they don't do anything and make me do all the work and take credit for it
- Severely punishing a simple human mistake
- Required to do annoying tasks for characters that are too lazy to do themselves
- Maybe this is a me problem but I hate it when my favorite/the fun boss battles are the short/easy ones that make me go "aw man it's over already" and the boring/annoying/not-fun ones are the ones that make me think "when is this boss gonna run out of health already?"
- Escort this/these character(s) missions...
- Giving me several rewards to help me with my game but I'm only allowed to pick one or maybe a very few and it's impossible to choose which rewards I wanna keep
- Obscure game gimmicks that I'm apparently suppose to be some genius to know/figure them out
I definitely agree with saving locations, or when you do try and save at a non-location you need to start over from last time anyway ugh. Especially on harder games ugh.

Yeah I hate helper characters who basically gets killed off unless you mod them LOL.

escort mission are the worst yes, you fail bc you took the wrong route or they are too slow or get killed off, grah.

Another pet peeve I have in gaming is obstacle courses. I mean seriously why in the world do some games make you have to do obstacles that can make it so frustrating. Like for example I just bought Watch Dogs Legion and I had to control this robot Spider. Then I had to make a jump to the next vent, but I kept falling. After 10 tries I made the jump and I was able to progress. I don't know what I'm saying makes any sense, but in general I don't like obstacle courses.

THIS. Oh my god, I hate obstacle courses because I'm always failing/dying on the same spot over and over. This is why I generally don't like platformers that much, and Mario is no different.

Speaking of Mario the ONE Mario game that has really has hard obstacle courses is Super Mario Bros The Lost Levels (All Stars version) My oh my as a kid I hated that game.

I do like them, but yeah I know what you mean, when you have to be quick in reactions or get to know said stage perfectly. But yeah not a big Mario fan because this.

And another Mario game I forgot to mention is Super Mario Sunshine. Oh gosh those "Secret" level missions gave me a hard time.

i can imagine D:

also i used to play a super mario bros. hack literally named "Super Mario Bros !" (yeah w/ an exclamation mark LOL) it was literally hell. you had to time and measure the edges for jumping by millimetres.

i only have one pet peeve in one game...trainz...
has had derailments since 2001 . in 2015 they removed derailments. it genuinly almost made me remove trainz a new era, then now in trainz 2022 and 2019, no derailments, huge pet peeve, they can do it they have for yearsss 2001 - 2014

I have a few at the moment. I may return here if I remember more.
  • Microtransactions and deliberately making things expensive to pressure people into buying them. It's quite annoying dealing with them in a mobile game. Dealing with this mess in a full-priced game is just rubbing salt in the wound. I already paid for the game, why should I pay more? Things are going up in cost and the last thing I want to deal with are microtransactions. Actually, should we even call them microtransactions anymore? I've seen a few currency bundles that go for almost $80. In rare cases, over $100. You could buy a game with that money. Why waste it on a fake currency if an item you bought with real money instantly disappears? I'm not caving into this scummy practice, and there seems to be psychology behind it as well to get more people to spend their money.
  • Giving AI/enemies an unfair advantage that a player wouldn't have access to. This is probably what gets me the most after microtransactions. I hate it when the game gets artificially difficult and the player can do very little about it. Sometimes, they can even do things that are pretty much impossible to a human such as near-instant reaction times for example.
  • Water levels. They're wet, tedious, and slow. Need I say more? lol

Ohh! The water levels I forgot how much I hate those 😅
I quit playing mobile and PC games so I don't struggle with microtransactions anymore but that's not to say they are idiotic and I wish they would keep their creepy money-sucking psychology off of games aimed for children because using gullible little kids as a means to make money is just so wrong

Another pet peeve I have in gaming is "Wind Mechanics" seriously why in the world does this exist? Its like you're trying to get through an obstacle but then it involves wind that blows you while you're moving. For example in Donkey Kong Country 2 there is a level called "Windy "Well" where you have to use the wind that blowing you up in the level and control your momentum when moving. I can't tell you how many times its so annoying to control because it messes with your control and I end up dying. So yeah I hate when games have wind mechanics that blow you whenever you're doing obstacle courses.

Being forced to save at select saving spots. I want to save anywhere I want, not go out of my way to find a saving spot and save there if there's a big event ahead or there's something I want to do at the moment. Let me save time by saving wherever I'd like.

Being forced into tutorials even through I don't need it as I already know how to play the game unless I'm new to it or need help learning something.

Unskippable cutscenes or anything like that as I just want to skip the things I've already seen as I play through a certain game for the dozenth time to enjoy it.

I am just going to say this but I HATE backtracking in games. I realized this while playing Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door. As much I am enjoying the game and having a fun time with it the only thing that is really bothering me is the backtracking. I noticed this when doing Chapter 2 when you have to solve Puzzles to rescue the Punies and then have to go back again to solve even more puzzles.

Then in Chapter 4 you actually have to backtrack even more just to do more requests and not only that trying to get your name and body back from that ghost. Thats one of the things that really bugged me. It almost reminds me of the backtracking in Donkey Kong 64 where you switch kongs just progress further.

Sorry for the rant but I just needed to express this.

I could had sworn there were more posts in this thread. Unless this is a different one. Anyway I don't care for puzzles in some games. Sometimes they are easy and sometimes they require a bit more thought. But it always interrupts the flow of the game where it has no business being in it.

Usually they aren't that fun or engaging either.

@VanitasFan26 Yeah backtracking is the worst. It's just a way to add filler to the game so it looks like it is a long game when it's really just wasting your time. Just like unnecessary puzzles tacked into a game.

TTYD is my all time fave game but the backtracking is insane and there's so much of it.

While too many tutorials is frustrating, I think the opposite extreme is bad too. By that I mean games that do a bad job at introducing or explaining their mechanics. There are few things more frustrating than being really late into a game only to realize there was some hidden mechanic the whole time that would’ve made things more convenient. Old games in particular are really bad about this.

There are only a few games where they give the option to skip the Tutorials. For example in Super Mario RPG Legend of the Seven Stars when Toad asks you "Do you know about timed hits" and you have option to say "Of course I do" meaning that you don't get the tutorial forced on you.

Then another one in Banjo-Kazooie where if Bottles asks you if you want to learn basic moves you can just say "You're good enough" by pushing "B" and you don't have to worry about him teaching you basic moves.

Its things like this that are so rare and I don't understand why today's games feel the need to force Tutorials on you and there is STILL no option to either skip it or disable it.

Agreed! Have the option so newcomers can watch them and others can skip them. I like having the difficulty option as well which a bunch of games seem to be doing.

Gaming Pet Peeves, we all have them and you're a liar if you say you don't.

Poor design choices, irritating necessities, lackluster implementation, predatory monetisation, there's a plethora of things and reasons for them that irritate even in your most favorite game or worse still, *gasp* ruin it!

What are those things that show up in games that really grinds your gears?

On the subject of tutorials, Pokémon is perhaps the most veteran-unfriendly franchise that I know of. I've abstained restarting games that I might otherwise enjoy replaying simply because I don't want to have to go through the long and tedious beginning moments of the game.
