Transferring to a different switch

I got New Horizons for my birthday and was staying with a friend who owned a switch at the time but now I don't have access to said switch so until I get my own I can't really play.

I know you can't transfer all of your data (at least not yet) and starting again doesn't bother me too terribly. My current plan is to leave all my bells and any items I wish to keep on someone else's island, then collect them on my new file. Is this currently the best option? Have you ever had to change consoles or start over for a reason besides your own free will?

That's probably the best method. You can find people who can hold your items for a day but check their feedback rating to make sure they are trusted or find someone who has done this before for another player.

There's a lot of stuff you can get back easily via trade like the reorderable furniture but the stuff that's bit so easy are nmts and any unorderables
