For me, creating a nice appearance takes priority. I don't play with anyone else at the moment, so it's not as if I'm commonly hosting hangout sessions for my friends where we all gather together in my house. There's no reason to make it so I can sit in every chair, turn on and off all the lamps all the time, and lay in the bed. I don't wander around my house for any length of time either, I'm out doing things on my island. For now, I'd rather create a design in a room that looks nice and leave it at that. My ways may change in the future if/when my friends start playing this game again, but for now, there's no point in me going out of my way to make sure I can access and use every piece of furniture
More often than not, I opt for functionality. Pretty sure I've been this way with all of the games. Like if there's a chair you can't sit in from the side because of armrests, like the modern office chair, I'll always have it turned so that the player can sit in it. It just sort of bugs me otherwise.
For me, I think it's all or mostly all for function. I might place a decoration on a table or something, but I won't place them in a way that makes part of my room useless. Now, if we're talking about Harv's Island...then there it's mostly for fashion; I have the room upstairs to resemble a diner or restaurant and it's impossible to enter the room unless I pick my character up and place him on the other side of the bar.
Lately, I only allowed movement from my living room, second floor, and basement. The other three rooms have little to interact. You can enter those rooms to view the stuff inside and that's it. I wish Nintendo will give us an option to expand these other rooms in the first floor!
And also, when will they ever considering upgrading my storage space to more than 1600? I need more!
Mine is semi functional. I’ll try to make it more functional later on when I have more ideas and modify what I have, but there are a few areas that are just for looks. Like the golden chair on the top of my kaldina (lost cloudia reference) inspired area is not meant to be a chair but represent the top of a building. I would’ve liked to be able to sit in the chair but with the terraforming restrictions and the limited space, I am fine with just looking at the area for now. Also the Crossroads area; i tried moving things to make more paths there or tried planning it and by making more areas to walk, it takes away the images that I was trying to recreate.

I’ve tried to make it as functional as possible, but some of my ideas required some sacrificing of walking room. I made sure there was at least one path where you could walk though.
I do it for both. I like to actually have a room that I can move around in opposed to one for show. In addition, I don't really use simple panels in rooms, becuase while they may look great in photos, in my opinion when they are just normally there, they don't look great.
i do a bit of both, tbh; i try to make sure everything such as beds and chairs are accessible while also doing my best to make rooms look nice; i want to be proud of my interior but i also don’t want to barricade my bed or chairs in the process
Fashion over function for me, however I try to make my island functional if possible, just fashion is more of a priority.
All my bed's are accesiable, and I try to keep them that way.
I try to have everything functional but it's not an absolute requirement. A lot of my rooms have a good amount of empty space anyway so as not to appear overwhelming, so it's easier for me to make things functional.
A bit of both for me as well! I try to keep beds, chairs, toilets, & sofas accessible and usable but I don’t mind if you can’t access some of the wall items like lamps and fans. I try to make it look pretty but I decorate so that the room doesn’t look too cluttered and is mostly accessible
Function has priority for sure!! And not to toot my own flute but I think I do a pretty good job of making the rooms still look great, while having things be accessible for the most part.
I really wish the office type chairs in game could be interacted with, so that you could swivel the chair part while it is still in place.. if that makes sense. It just looks weird to have an office type chair be far away from a desk
I do both, but mainly function. If I know I won’t use the tables and couches often and it looks better, I’ll close them in. I try to balance it out even though it takes awhile, but I’m usually happy with how my rooms turn out. uwu
One main thing I at least make sure of is that you can walk through each room. I’ve been to some islands that make it completely closed off or cluttered to where I can’t get through anything—only observe what I’m seeing. Now, as gorgeous as these rooms can look, it makes me sad that I can’t walk through them. Idk, it could be just me. :u
i'd also say a mix of both! i generally try to avoid having seating areas you can't get to for instance and i prefer to have my island with as many paths/areas as possible for fast travel (some dream addresses i've visited have lots of dead ends and long winding mazes for example and that would seriously get on my nerves to get from one side of the island to the other)
There are definitely parts in my house where I've just put a lot of items, because it looks okay. My toy room comes to mind, that's not an easy room to walk around in (I also might change it up at some point because it doesn't really fit into the rest of the house). For the upstairs room, I've made sure things like the bed and the couch in front of the tv are accessible. But the desk chair is parked up to the desk so you can't sit in it. In the basement I have a similar corner with lots of plants and green sofa's, but I don't think there's room to walk in and sit on the sofa. Another brown sofa and bed are accessible.
At least I do manage to keep the main entrance room one that you can easily move around in, as it holds my closet, diy workbench, and access to three other rooms I would be annoyed if I had to navigate carefully through that room.
i'm definitely going for a combination of both. the house designs with tons of furniture are usually really cramped and i don't like trying to navigate my way around lots of furniture but they look really nice.
it doesn't really both me if i can't sit in the chairs or interact with all of the furniture, i'd just rather it not feel cluttered.
function over fashion! bc this is a game that is intended to be played - i never can fully enjoy designs, indoor or outdoor, that are all out a single photo or looking at the scene rather than engaging with it. i wanna interact ! i want things to have actionable interest. that's the point of this game to me.
