Custom designs appearing translucent?

So I'm trying to make a custom design of each letter of my town to display over the top of the stone pathway in my entrance area. However even when I pick the darkest shade of black, the stone pathway still shows through the lettering! Is this normal or am I doing something wrong? I sort of like it as looks more natural, just not sure I'm doing this right!! Thanks

They do that normally!

When you place a pattern with at least one transparent pixel over a path, yeah it shows the shape of the tiles through the pattern. If you didn't want that to happen you'd have to make the whole pattern colored
