Anyone else like having a mixture of popular and unpopular villagers?

Mwah, if I have popular villagers it is just because I like them... not because they are popular. If I look at what my eventual villager list would be, about half are popular and half are less so. Right now, the only really popular one I have is Whitney (I guess), but I would love to have Fauna and Erik (eventually, that will happen, but I am taking it slow).

I'm the only one who has to look at my villagers faces every single day, so they need to appeal to my aesthetic preferences rather than that of the majority. Whether or not they are popular doesn't really matter to me.

My favourite villager on my main island right now is Goose.

But I really only care about the villagers I like who are mostly unpopular. I got Bob and Bunnie randomly but I kinda wanna get rid of them lmao

I don't make decisions based on the fact if they are popular or not, but I do understand that it's nice to have a mix

I think some of my villagers are very popular, others not so much, but I would only keep villagers that I really vibe with
like Diana for example, very popular villager but I keep her because she makes me smile and she's so pretty!
same for Cookie, I don't think she is THAT popular, but she's my favorite because she just makes me smile with her

it just comes down to how much i like the villager, not their popularity
if anything, I try to ignore it because it makes me feel like they aren't my special villagers, my little friends, if that makes sense

popular or unpopular, it doesn't really matter to me! i just kinda like who i like haha ;; if i think they're cute, i'll take them in regardless of tier or popularity! i have villagers who range from never talked about (filbert) to very popular and "trendy" (marshal). it's just a matter of whose design i like the most ^^

I plan on having whoever I like who shows up randomly. But my taste and the popularity of a villager are very close to each other. I think the "worst" dreamies I have are Stitches, Coco and Apollo and even then at least the latter two are still often talked about.

I really tried to make my villager list have some popularity variety (not because I actually care, but I kinda wanted my list to be different from other's) but that turned out to be literally impossible as every single character that fit my theme was at least mildly popular. I guess trippy surreal villagers are really well liked

If I had more space though, I would have some less popular guys like Hopkins and Paolo. really hoping we get more villager plot space at some point :(

I'm happy as long as I can collect a villager's photo! If I have that, I sort of let them decide if they're staying or leaving.

I don’t really care about popularity. If I like them, I keep them. I just want a good mix of villagers cuz I don’t like it when a lot of the dialogue is the same.

My unpopular villagers are Canberra and Stinky. Poppy’s there, too, she’s kind of underrated. Then I have Ketchup and Hornsby. I really like the idea of a mix

Yeah definitely! I don't want to have the same villagers that everyone has, but there are some popular villagers that I like cos they are cute! So yes, I do try to make it a bit more balanced.

I just pick whoever I like the best - and that usually turns out to be a mixture of popular and non popular. For some reason popular villagers I tend to like less - maybe that's just because I get sick of seeing them so much on Twitter lol

yeah, it's always been how it is for my towns. like, i'd have the really really top tier, who happens to be my favorites not just villagers bc they're popular (marshal/diana) and less popular villagers that i like (lyman, jeremiah)

I like doing it this way too because it just feels right. I love it when a random villagers becomes someone you unexpectedly grow to love for me that was Keaton. I do love my popular ones like Marshal and Judy but it’s the less popular ones that surprise me.

a lot of the villagers i like are pretty popular but i’ve been giving the more unpopular villagers a chance lately and some of them aren’t bad at all! definitely deserve more love ;;

I have a mix and it's based on personal opinion, not popularity. Sometimes popularity can be a benefit in deciding, because it's easier to find pictures or video of that villager. You can look at a villager and say "Oh, they would look so cute on my island." The other day I came across Alli on a Nook Miles Island. It was nighttime, and I wanted to see what she looked like during the day. I couldn't decide based on her model because she looks better in person than from a still, but there weren't many videos to be found of her at all. I went with my gut and invited her, but I think it does go to show that having some amount of popularity and exposure can help in a decision.

Dom is a popular villager, but just from looking at him from photos, I wouldn't have been interested in him. It was luck that I got him as a starter on my second island.

There was one villager I had to have: Pietro. I wouldn't have really thought about him at first if I hadn't seen a negative post about him that included someone hitting him with a net. It broke my heart and I knew I needed him.

I have Marshal and Whitney, but the rest of my villagers are low tier (Ike, Becky, Annalisa, etc.). I plan on having five "popular" villagers and five other low tiers that I like.

That's my personal taste, I like having a mixture like that. Anyone else have that preference?

I like very few of the popular villagers--Merengue, Kyle, Molly, and Roald are I think the only ones in S+ through A tier--am neutral on some, and actively dislike the designs of the rest. I also don't have dreamies, and don't have a set of villagers I'm planning to work towards. I'm actually actively trying to let villagers go when they ping to move, so I can see more villagers than I would otherwise. (We'll see if I stay strong when Muffy asks to leave.) I'd say my preferences skew towards unpopular villagers overall.
