History has a lot of coincidences where two or more things happen within the same year or same month (but in different years). Today, I compiled a list of historical coincidences that may surprise you:

  • Both the Ferguson incident and the Charlottesville incident happened in August. Both even worsened race relations.
  • Speaking of Ferguson, a beach officer got fired for calling Trayvon Martin a “thug”. On the first anniversary of his firing, the shooting of Michael Brown happened.
  • The year OJ Simpson’s trial occurred was also the same year as the Oklahoma City Bombing. The year the perpetrator behind the Oklahoma City bombing got executed was also the same as the 9/11 Attack. The year the culprit behind the 9/11 Attack was killed was also the same year as Casey Anthony’s trial (which was comparable to OJ Simpson’s trial).
  • The last four presidents that won an election on November 8th (Franklin D Roosevelt, John F Kennedy, George HW Bush, and Donald Trump) began their first term next year.
  • Prior to 2016, the last time the Chicago Cubs won a World Series was before New Mexico and Arizona became states. By the time they won their third World Series, one of the four states that didn’t exist back then had a baseball team that won a World Series.
  • The years of the 9/11 Attack, the Virginia Tech Massacre, the Sandy Hook Massacre, and the Parkland Shooting all had the same calendar arrangement from March 1st to December 31st (i.e. Thanksgiving was on November 22nd).
  • The first Friday the 13th after the 9/11 Attack was also the first Friday the 13th after the first anniversary of the 9/11 Attack. After that, Friday the 13th doesn’t happen in September for another 11 years.
  • Most of Pixar’s movies and most of Disney’s animated movies (starting with Oliver and Company) are released in June and November. Those were also the months World War I began in and ended in.
  • Both the Civil War and World War II ended in the same months they began (Civil War began and ended in April as World War II began and ended in September).
  • The month the Civil War began in was also the same month as the San Francisco Earthquake of 1906. It’s also when F5 tornadoes are the most common.
  • The month World War II began in was also the same month as the worst terror attack on US Soil. It was also when hurricane activity is at the peak.
  • The Supreme Court chief justice that declared tomatoes to be a vegetable also rules segregation as “separate but equal”. He was also the same chief justice that ruled that people born on American soil are automatically American citizen regardless of their parents’ citizenship status.
  • Both Plessey v Ferguson and the eruption of Mount St Helens happened on May 18th during a leap year. Another interesting fact about Plessey v Ferguson is that the opposite decision (Brown v Board of Education) also happened in May.
  • The Shining, the original version of Friday the 13th, and Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back all came out in theaters on the same month within the same year. This was also when Mount St Helens erupted.
  • Adolf Hitler and Osama bin Laden were both announced dead on May 1st.
  • The month the worst Supreme Court decision (Dred Scott v Sandford) took place in was also the same month the Supreme Court ruled in favor of the Westboro Baptist Church.
  • Both Martin Luther King and Anne Frank were born in 1929.
  • Both Thanksgiving and Christmas were declared national holidays by the same president (Abraham Lincoln).
  • Before Daylight Savings Time was changed to March and November:
    • The last time Daylight Savings Time began in a month with Friday the 13th was in 2001. An interesting coincidence is that in that same month (April), Friday the 13th was Good Friday. It was also the first time in 11 years that Friday the 13th occurred in that month. The next time Friday the 13th occurs in April was in the same year Daylight Savings Time started beginning in March.
    • The last time Daylight Savings Time ended in a month with Friday the 13th was in 2006. An interesting coincidence is that it was the last Friday the 13th before Daylight Savings Time began in March and the last time Friday the 13th occurs in October in 11 years. The next time Friday the 13th occurs in October was two months after the next Total Solar Eclipse in the United States.
    • After Daylight Savings Time was changed to begin in March and end in November, Friday the 13th can occur in both months. In fact, after the change, the first time Friday the 13th happened in a month Daylight Savings Time began was in the same year the first time Friday the 13th happened in a month Daylight Savings Time ended.
  • All three presidents of the United States that were president when a Star Wars trilogy began are Democrats. They were even the last three Democratic presidents.
  • The year the first Pokémon games to come out was the same year Super Mario 64 was released. The year Pokémon made its way to the United States was the same year Ocarina of Time was released.
  • Coincidentally, Pokémon Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon, Breath of the Wild, and Super Mario Odyssey had worldwide releases within the same year.
  • In both 2013 and 2016, a new Pokémon generation begins as the games were released to the 3DS. Those were the same years Animal Crossing: New Leaf and the Welcome amiibo update came out.
