You can get extra rooms and an extra floor from expansions

Joan sells red turnips which grow constantly untill you pick them (THE BIGGER IT IS THEM MORE TOM WILL BUY IT FOR)

and white turnips which are like the stock market and prices vary each day from when you sell them to tom

You have to water the red turnips everyday WITHOUT FAIL or they'll rot.
