Words of advice to your pre-New Horizons self?

I would have set the time way back because I time travel a lot and am now at the end of October. If I had started the game and set the time to like 10 months back, like to 2019, then I wouldn't be so far away from the actual time. I also would have spent more time thinking of a name for my island. Before in New Leaf, it was a town so the ending would be -ville or -town or something like that, but I hadn't though about island names and felt kind of put on the spot, so I went with the first thing I thought of and I wish that I had done something else ending in -Isle or -Bay or something.

I would say to myself to pay more attention to the placement of the plaza. Now, it's only four spaces away from the airport, which means there is no way to make a cool entrance to my island. It is completely centered though, so that's why I'm not resetting and will figure a way to work around it :)

And I would have joined the online community sooner, to have some people to play with maybe (still have to find those, but at least I am now at last starting to trade via this forum, for which I am very excited :D

I would tell myself that I can not relocate the residential services building so please don't place it at a bad spot like where it is right now. Also, if you see your dreamies, don't have them as your first 5 because they don't get their real homes which I still don't understand why Nintendo won't give villagers their real home from the get go. So RIP Dom's and Stiches lovely homes that I will never see unless I let them go :cry::cry:

Note to pre-NH self: do not put down all of your remaining plots as soon as you can.
It is not necessary to have 10 villagers for the 3-stars rating, and you'll have to island hop every single day if you don't want to see those plots instantly filled with randoms.

i would tell myself to place the starting villager houses and nooks/museum on the beach early on so it would make it easier to terraform and plan out where you actually want to place things in the long-term.

Don't go crazy terraforming your island the day you unlock it. Take your time and really plan out your changes so you don't realize you hate it after spending thousands of bells moving buildings and houses around!!

For me the biggest piece of advice would be:

Don’t go into this game expecting it to be an animal crossing game ‘cause it has animal crossing in the title.
It’s a good game and I’m enjoying it, but its a very, very different creature from previous titles.
Lower your hopes and standards for it and just accept it for what it is. It’s ok to be frustrated at what it isn’t, but try not to let that rule your head, because you’ll end up putting the game down and never picking it back up again.
Yes, it falls short, but try and enjoy it. After all, you spent over £300 getting it.

I don't know why you're such an idiot, but contrary to what you think you heard from a "things to know before you pick a map in NH" video, it is completely possible to climb up and destroy third tier cliffs. don't pick the map based on where the third tier cliffs are, it lichrally doesn't matter you absolute moron

and please stop using nook mile tickets when there isn't even an open plot mate

You don’t need all those flowers. Stop hoarding flowers.
I still need someone to drum this into me, I know it, but my weird subconscious is still hoarding them... I guess since we can’t store them in case we want them later now?
I’d have told myself not to try to get villagers I liked early on since their houses would be horrible and I’d have to move them out and back in anyway so it’s just not worth it.
(edit: that said, I got Fauna as my first Normal and I love her and I don’t mind her default house so she’s staying forever I think.)
Be open minded, this won’t be your New Leaf town but your old friends are still out there and you can make new friends in unexpected places! (Fauna, Punchy and Diana were never part of the plan but I wouldn’t have it any other way now!)

I needed to hear the no flower hoarding advice, now. :D

I would tell myself to go with my second choice island name and to be a little more careful about building placement, because while yes, we can move things, it's expensive, time consuming, and annoying. I'm still undoing my mess.

Also so many nmt wasted looking for villagers without open spots.... yikes.

Oh, I remembered another one! Place your buildings on the beach first, then think of what you want to do with your island.. it will save you a lot of bells. I am currently moving all the buildings for the third time (to the beach, before moving them AGAIN once I've finished terraforming).

Start scanning you cards as soon as you get the campsite to reduce the camper pool asap.

Don't waste tickets looking for awesome villagers for the three tutorial houses. Thankfully I wasn't too picky and only had to reinvite one of them.

I would inform myself that you can't actually move the river mouths or the resident services, so yes, it actually does matter which map to pick :p

don't worry so much about terraforming. you'll figure it out. you won't have a tumblr-esque island on day 1. it's okay you don't know what dreamies you want, you'll change your mind 10x anyway. also forget about your idea of a natural island, you'll change that too. just sit back and enjoy it!

I've give myself the blueprint to my current town layout. Save me from having to retarraform 5+ times and going through a couple weeks of depression. Also, would give my current 10 villagers to save me the trouble getting Merry just to get rid of her.

  • Budget those Nook Mile Points!
  • Don't focus on getting all the villagers you want right away. Be open to others!

More advice: think harder about greetings when a villager asks you and make sure you capitalize!!!!!

Dear Me: Don't put your house on the little peninsula and make sure you actually look at the other maps. Also, make sure you decide where everything is gonna go before you select your map.
