What are your experiences with scammers?

Great thread idea! I have thankfully never been scammed on a serious level, but would also like to hear about other's experience to protect myself in the future.

Edit: The only thing I can think of is sometimes when I open up my island on the turnip exchange website (not belltreeforums because I don't charge an entry fee when I post here!) to sell a service (villager crafting, celeste, etc) there are a few people who the moment they arrive to my island race to whatever NPC is offering a service and talk to them, then race back to the airport without a hello/ty/goodbye and don't pay the entry fee. This honestly doesn't bother me that much, because I don't charge crazy entry fees anyways, and in the end I am doing this to help others and not make a profit for myself, but I do think this is a bit rude. But whatever, hopefully those people do enjoy whatever service I was selling anyways.

I haven’t got scammed on any serious level but had cases where they forgot to pay and do come back this is happened more then once which is strange but i didn’t mind since the payment was not anything serious I’m just too nice I guess

i’ve never been scammed but i’ve noticed that anybody who has so far has been scammed from people on discord, a platform that i’ve never used for trading. i only use tbt for trading and the majority of people on here are wonderful so when it comes to trading with anybody from other platforms such as discord, it’s always good to be a bit more cautious ;u;

Never understood why people scam in games...

I mean, people might scam others in real life because they need to put food on the table...

But in games?... like is it really life or death if you don't get some digital pixel?
Plus, the point of this game... is the process... not the instant gratification...
Even if we were to look at dopamine and serotonin levels... science has proven that humans associate pleasure with the process of waiting for the reward more than the reward actualization...

174 villager sales and amiibo card trades on TBT and nobody has scammed me. The worst that has happened to me is an amiibo card I received for Maple was the UK version when I specified I was collecting US cards but I stopped caring. I gave them positive feedback anyway. Now when I tried amiibo trading on Reddit for maybe a week I received some bent cards. Wouldn’t do it again.

I've never been scammed in either New Horizons or New Leaf, thankfully.

I have heard of people being scammed on turnip.exchange though, where someone says that they have 500+ turnip prices and require a super large fee to visit the island, then when people come over and drop the bells the scammer will kick everyone out with the - menu and then block them and no one can really know until it happens to them because there's no rating system like on here :/

I got scammed once in turnip exchange. Not a big deal though.

The person asked for an entry fee of 2 rusted parts, and I gave them what they asked for, but they just picked up the item and didn't let me through. I tried to disconnect, but the only thing that happened was that they kept the item and I was back in my town without the two rusted parts. I should've had more common sense.

If someone asks for an entry fee first, before letting you in (especially a huge one), be careful - it's more than likely a scam. There's usually these emoticons next to a scammers post: 💩🤡👎, which more than not, indicate they're not reliable.

someone was selling me the full creme diner set for 500k, and ofc i was new to the platform and i was desperate, so i took them up on the offer.

when i got there, their entrance was surrounded by fences and they were standing there doing friendly emotes. the limited space made it pretty impossible for us to trade.

before i could ask them how we were supposed to trade, he kept asking questions like 'why do you want this set' or something along the lines of that. i told him that it was for a cafe/restaurant for my island, but he kept assuming i was lying and decided to boost the price to 800k.

the insisting went on for around 10 minutes and at this point i was completely infuriated. he suddenly kept quiet for a few minutes before saying 'alright, 300k for the set'.

naive little me of course gave him the money. after picking up the money, he told me he 'has to be afk for a while because his siblings were fighting'. i was getting bored of waiting, so i left my switch and went on youtube to pass the time.

5 minutes, he's not there. 10 minutes, nope. 15 minutes, again, no. 20 minutes rolled by and i had found out he had ended the session, without giving me the diner set.

edit: please notice all the red flags when you're trading!! some people think it's funny to be dishonest, escpecially on amazing platforms and games like tbt and ac.

My friend openly bragged about scamming a raymond. He said he’d only drop half of the NMT he was gonna pay, talk to raymond, and then drop off the other half. He didn’t drop off the other half, and was immediately shamed on our discord server.

Pretty sure the host could power down and erase the actions but it be ya own sometimes

I almost got scammed , someone in another site wanted to buy a crown from me , but I saw on said site that they had a whole history and reviews about the person being a scammer.

Best thing I can say about avoiding scammers is to enter to a site where you can leave feedback about trading experiences about people , like TBT , Nookazon or other sites , don't just enter to random discord servers about AC trading.

Thankfully I've never been scammed by anyone in Animal Crossing. I've had people try/act weird and I usually just disconnect my game or power off my device and never have had an issue. I always feel so bad for people who get scammed when looking for villagers. It's so sad to hear how people are taking advantage of people desperate for Raymond, Judy, etc.

I haven't been scammed yet, but I don't usually trade large amounts of bells/NMT that I'm afraid of it.

The one time that traded for Audie, I dumped half of my NMTs, talked to Audie, and then paid the rest, so if I was being scammed, I would have only been out half of what I paid. My seller was totally cool with it!

Never got scammed and never scammed, but I was mistakenly reported as a scammer on Nookazom, which was a very... fun experience. |:(

It was around 5 am when I was doing a trade with someone. I listed the item on the website as x2 (Meaning I was trading two). I was super tired and didn't realize I only gave the trader 1 item and I closed the session too early because I was so tired I just wanted to lie down. The trader didn't contact me immediately and instead just went straight to the moderators to report me lol
She did contact me after and I gave her the other item, apologizing over and over again, but I guess she didn't tell the mods it was resolved because I got muted from their Discord server until I explained my side of the story. Everything's cool now, but remember to only close the session if you absolutely HAVE TO lol

In all honesty, I would do the same. She couldn't know you were tired and wanting to lie down. All she could know and see was that you didn't do your part of the deal. And with scammers running rampant right now, I wouldn't think twice before coming to the conclusion that you had scammed me if you did that.

Even though you apologized later, you gave enough reason for her and the mods to see you as an untrustworthy trader.

Yeah, you're 100% right haha
I talked with the mods and the person I was trading with and everything's 100% cool now, but still, yikers

This is incredibly untrue - people set up pay-first gates like you described to prevent them from being scammed.
