What are your experiences with scammers?

I haven't been scammed, mainly because I haven't done a lot of trading, but I plan to do some more (mainly to get my dreamies) But this community is really trusting which is really nice because I just joined like 2 days ago and I've been trusted to pay second one with a big trade (Judy) cuz I guess it seems suspicious to offer a large amount and to have only joined recently... but with a rating system, you will probably only ever get away with 1 scam because most people do not have a -rating and when they do I'm guessing they aren't going to be treated as nicely...

I've always had good experiences on here with amiibo card and in game trades. I think it's important that we have feedback since it hold everyone on here liable for trades. I never really had trades outside of this website, I have done turnip exchange but it got so chaotic so quickly that I don't bother with it unless someone on here is hosting a private que.

I haven't been scammed, and I've done a LOT of trades. I trust people on TBT, and I'm pretty chill anyway when it comes to this site. No entry fees, come and go as you please, if there's no fence around trees feel free to take the fruit, etc. I've never even had flowers picked without the person asking for permission first. I even leave items on the ground sometimes if I have friends coming over and they're untouched or people ask if they can just catalog. I check people's WiFi ratings before doing trades anyway (for island visits, I don't really care since there's not much to lose on New Horizons). No issues, and the Discord has been very pleasant for casual chatting!

I also use the big ACNH trading Discord, and it's a totally different story there. Fenced in area with my crafting station for crafting services and just enough room to trade. You drop payment. I walk over payment and make sure it's right, then I drop the item. Then we can pick our new goodies up. No entry into the island, no cataloging decorations. Get your stuff and leave. I've heard enough scamming stories from people where they tried to be nice and got scammed as a result. It's very easy to make a new Discord account, there's zero verification on the bigger servers (most servers, really), and to me it's just not worth taking the risk.

I have technically been scammed once (I made a thread about it)

I used Nookazon (first mistake) and this girl wanted to catalog some of my songs and I told her my rate was around 10-15k/song. She asked for all 53 I had on hand so I asked if 550k was ok with her (ik ik its a lot, but I just multiplied my rate by the number of songs she wanted). She asked if her friend could come over too to catalog and would also pay the 550k. I said sure and just let them both come. Basically, they found my DIY pile and asked if they could buy. I initially said no, but I still asked what they wanted. The asked for some of my rarer/more popular DIYs (crowns, garden stones, etc.) and I asked for 3M (again a lot, but I initially didn't really want to sell them so I didn't completely expect them to take it). While picking up the DIYs, the friend came and I dc'ed when they were picking up more DIYs (I moved them so they didn't have to go back to the pile), but between her picking up the DIYs and me disconnecting, the game saved the DIYs in her inventory before she paid me in full.

Their whole reasoning was that 10k/song was too much because cataloging "doesn't cost me anything"

wtf kinda reason?? I even told them if I could catalog some furniture I would take the price down but they accepted both prices instantly.

Anyways, I say technically because I only lost 5 DIYs but made a total of about 2.4M bells, so I'm not really complaining. The whole discord convo is 19 screenshots long and like I said on my original post about this, I'l send the screenshots to anyone that wants them.

Basically, don't let "friends" into your trades as well, even if they're also paying.

Btw, she ended up getting banned on Nookazon.

No scamming experiences, than goodness. I did trade with someone on here who I was afraid would turn out to be a scammer. He had only joined the site an hour before they offered 2 million bells for my villager, and he rolled up at my island wearing the crown. But then he turned out to just be a super nice guy who was really complimentary about my island and happened to have a suspiciously large amount of money!

Wow this thread is pretty active, I want to contribute something but it's not my experience, for the sake of keeping this anonymous I will change some of this,

A friend of mine got scammed out of their villager, they lost a fairly common villager that had been given to them as a gift. Will not answer any questions regarding this.

I have never been scammed luckily!! And I do a lot of trades across various different websites!
I've only had two incidences that rubbed me the wrong way. The first time, I went to an island where a villager was crafting. When I arrived, the host already had a nearly full island (I usually avoid islands that are full due to the incredible amount of loading screens and disconnections).
I dropped a tip of like 50k, they said thanks and picked it up, and I started heading towards the villager's house. People started leaving the island and with every step I took there was a loading screen LOL.
I eventually got inside the house but the villager had stopped crafting :( The island host was like "Oh sorry everybody!" and ended the session without giving the tip back. It wasn't a big deal I guess, maybe they just got overwhelmed and forgot? But nevertheless, nowadays I usually give the tip afterwards. xD

The second time, I was letting people from Facebook visit my island for a DIY. I was asking 1 nook ticket per entry. 1 person arrived, I said hello but got no response from them. They ran straight to the villager's house, and back to the airport. No goodbye or thank you. They also didn't drop the ticket, so I messaged them on Facebook asking where they left it because I couldn't find it. They didn't apologize but said "oh I forgot, I was in a hurry. I'll come back later" but I had a trade I had to get to so I closed my gates.
A little while later they messaged me saying "your gates are closed" but I was already frustrated by their attitude (not bothering to say hi, thank you, or even a simple sorry for forgetting the ticket) so I just said "yeah because I had somewhere to be as well." and they didn't respond lol. I wouldn't consider this a scam because maybe they did genuinely forget, but they didn't seem apologetic at all about it. If they had said sorry I would've said its fine!!

only been scammed once and it wasn't as bad as it could've been. went to someone's island via turnipexchange, he set up an area for everyone to drop their entry fees (I think I paid like 2 gold nuggets?). He then let a friend in so it saved, then kicked everyone out. I tried to dc once I realised but ofc it'd saved bc he let a friend in. but I've never been scammed on tbt, probably bc of the feedback system here

I feel pretty lucky in that I haven't been scammed in online trades. I've been trading for years too, between the Animal Crossing and Pokemon franchises.

The thing that seems to help the most is to find a trustworthy community to trade in, where the majority of the traders are honest and friendly. For Animal Crossing, this site is the place to be for that. I don't feel the need to trade on Nookazon, Reddit, or anywhere else. You can trade for everything you'd want here, and you're less likely to get scammed than in other places. You are also more likely find people who will be respectful and follow the unwritten community rules, like greeting others, leaving via the airport, staying near the airport for trades, asking to do things, not trampling flowers, etc.

I'm new here so I haven't had any trades here yet!

But on another site, I was trading DIY for DIY on my island. This wasn't the first one I did, and it went well up until then. Usually, I drop and they drop theirs and then we check and then grab. This guy dropped a different DIY and it was one of the ones everyone gets (tiki torch, I think) and then grabbed mine and tried to leave. I closed the game and thankfully, it didn't save and I got my DIY back. I messaged him, hoping maybe he dropped the wrong one by mistake. He proceeded to curse at me for not letting him have the DIY so I blocked him =_=

Another time, the trade went well and I was expecting them to leave. They instead just started heading up into my island without asking. I was afraid they were going to pluck my hybrids and steal some duplicate DIYs I had on the beach, so I quickly ended session. They apologized and said they thought they could visit my shops after the trade (no mention prior to trade). So now I create a fenced-in area around my airport for most trades :\

I had someone with no ratings on Nookazon try to scam me out of NMT. I was trading them as a 1 for 1 deal for large star fragments and this girl contacts me on discord, asking for 5 NMT, which would be a 5 large star fragment trade. She comes to my town and doesn't do much but stand there until I ask her to drop. She only drops two large star fragments when my listing clearly said it was 1 for 1. So I took 2 NMT and dropped them, waited for her to pick them up, then quickly ended the session. I got a bad salty rating from the scammer but I left a rating back, notifying anyone else who traded with her that she tried to scam me. She honestly got what she deserved and had it coming. If she didn't like the price she could've gone to someone else instead of trying to swipe my tickets. It honestly wasn't even that many tickets. It wasn't worth it. She deleted her nookazon and discord afterwards, so she probably made a new profile to try and scam other people. :/

Oh rip, sorry to hear that :(

Never been scammed (yet) but early on (like the first week or 2 of the game when glitches were really rampant still) when I was looking for Ankha I posted on reddit and had someone PM me saying they were willing to sell her to me for 70 NMT and 20M bells with the "guarantee" of having her out in an hour. This person had almost 0 post history on a new account and apparently had sold 40+ villagers with no issues and were "very trustworthy" and would "assure quality and no glitches". When I was hesitating they decided to offer me crafting services and selling rare items because their villager was "a talented little fellow" and "see my town and you'll understand".

Dude. What?? It's people like this that give me bad vibes and make me pretty much trade exclusively on here.

also made the mistake of using nookazon. went to somebody's island to pick up a villager, gave them the nmt and as soon as i was going to walk in the villager's house they kicked me out and blocked me :( funny how nookazon went under maintenance right after it happened too lol what a sketchy place

Wouldn't call it "scammed" per-say, but someone on here stole my fruit when I let them in for a villager crafting. I gave them a negative rating appropriately, but it turns out they made another account. I let (what I thought was) another user into my town to buy something, and it turned out that it was the same person. I immediately closed the gates and reported the alt account.

Which villager was it? If they are available via Amiibo, I will scan them in for you the next time that you have a space.

awww thank you! it's alright though, my friend is going to help me get him. thank you for the offer though!!! <3 it was raymond tragically, i should've been a little more cautious there tbh lol. it's always sketchy going for him

I've did hundreds of trades on discord and never been scammed. I'm usually careful on who and how I do the trade.

I have not really been scammed before.

However, one time, I was hosting a DIY Recipe. I hosted a private island on Turnip Exchange, with the link only posted on this forum. The topic made it clear that the villager's house was right next to the Airport, and people were clearly lining up for it in town. One person showed up, ignored the line, and just went to wander my island. When I told them that the villager's house was by the airport, they did not respond, so I went to track them down. I eventually found them shaking my fruit trees. They picked a whole bunch of my fruit trees clean, as well as plucking several of the hybrids that I was trying to breed. They acted like they did not realize that they did anything wrong, and left without visiting the crafting villager.
