Upcoming Discord proof of age thoughts

What if you look younger than you really are?
My mum has always said if she never knew me, she'd think I looked at least 16.
Hopefully that doesn't affect too much?
I'm not all fond of the idea of face ID either.

Honestly the more we put everything online the more hackers and server problems will be a common factor. Then nothing will be safe.

I don't know enough about this, but some of my friends on Discord said this is mostly for those that have an 18+ Discord account and those that don't have nothing to worry about. I don't really know enough about Discord, but I never knew it had a version like that.

I also heard of others using fake faces to trick the AI. So we could all just use faces of the Discord creators.

I saw an update saying they’re waiting for a few more months until they put the policy in. It feels like delaying to cover themselves and potentially make people forget it’s happening rather than an actual solution.

What I’m curious about is whether a mass exodus will actually happen or it’ll be like YouTube where the platform keeps getting worse, but people stay because no alternative takes its place as the primary site for its niche.

at the risk of gettong a low post quality infraction, I believe I speak for most everyone when I say

I personally don't think discord has this luxury, and if they think they do, then they're even more foolish than I thought

youtube came out in a time when there were hardly any other alternatives to what it offered and was able to beat out the competition in the early stages of its existence. discord, on the other hand, is just one of a many of a line of messaging apps. and not even close to the first in the line of notable ones of the era either

like I remember a time when I was routinely joint using yim, aim, msn messenger, and irc all at the same time. all messenger apps that compare to discord in terms of popularity for their era, and all that predate discord by a pretty wide margin

the bigger question imo isn't so much of if discord could be overtaken, but what service, current or upcoming, could end up replacing it

I feel like YouTube and Discord are two completely different things in what they offer. Discord is really just a place to chat and it has some other bells and whistles, but it's not necessary. So I could see a mass exodus happening if they keep trying to act stupid. Someone mentioned they're now giving the option to use credit card information instead of your face for facial recognition features.

Which is even stupider and riskier than the options they were offering before. Especially since they've already been known to have so many data breaches. If you want people to trust you with their information you need to actually be worthy of that trust to begin with. If the time comes and they need everyone to comply I will just stop using Discord. I'm not going to be hanging around there like I did with Twitter because my friends refused to be anywhere else. I finally went back to see what became of that dumpster fire site and was repulsed by what was on my dash that I never agreed to see, so I deleted my account.

This may be cynical of me, but I feel like this was never about protecting others and just another way to get more information on everyone.

I mean I don't know much about it, but I've seen a lot of negative reactions (for good reason.) I don't wanna feed anything of mine to a stupid ai scanner or whatever anyways (⊙_◎)

As someone in a country where this is already commonplace online, and looks significantly younger than they are, I've had no issues.

I'll get ID'd trying to buy 18+ products in person (despite being mid-30s) but these AI verifications aren't as bad.

EXACTLY because I'm 13 and I look way younger !! I'm so sick of all this AI age verification stuff it's so annoying

What. The ****?! 😭

I don't have a credit card yet, but I know something fishy is happening if they're willing to go that far. I believe the only valid time to enter that information in is when you're buying something from a *trustworthy* company...not for age verification!! >_<

Why would you even need to use a credit card people have ID's for a reason !! ( ≧Д≦)

I made a similar comment on TBT's Discord and someone mentioned those who pay for Nitro would already have their credit card on Discord. I never thought of that since I've only ever had basic features and never planned to pay for extra.
