This may affect the forum, so I am wondering how people feel about the upcoming Discord requirements of proving your age through official identification scans, or scanning your face for proof of age?

I am all for making sure people are who they say they are, but it seems a bit extreme to put your personal identity out there, especially after Discord has been hacked before.

Discord is used by many members here, including community events.

What do we do?

I hate it for many reasons, and it feels like a repeat of Roblox asking for your face for age verification (and no, I haven't done it either, I'd rather stay without chat). The privacy concerns in both cases can't be ignored. Your face will probably sold to some database without your consent eventually in my opinion.

I didn't know that was a thing. Just way for them to get more information on us. No thanks. If that's what's going to happen I'll gladly leave Discord.

I have been living under a rock and was unaware of this until I saw the thread.

That said, I agree with RoxiePico, especially with the part about Roblox. And it’s not just about selling data, I’m worried the face ID thing might guess soneone’s age group wrong and then it would be insanely hard for that user to change it back to something more accurate. I remember that happening to one of my friends…

Also, idk what alternatives for Discord are out there since I see some people are already set on quitting. I know there’s Slack, but that one is for businesses. And Guilded (targeted at gaming communities) got discontinued.

I live in a country where this is already the norm online, so I'm not too surprised to be honest. I'm not saying I like it, but I got over my outrage on websites requiring this a while back.

Selfie verification is my preferred method, government ID I dislike, credit card checks I refuse.

Back when it was just face verification I would hold up a photo of master actor Robert Duvall and that was enough to get me anywhere I needed to be.
Saw a video today of a mad lad using Garry’s Mod assets to do the entire process and get approved. There will always be a way around it if you’re creative.

apart of me doesn't understand the outrage specifically for this. i know companies are using child safety measures as a front for data collection but if you're on the internet doing anything really, like posting to social media, online shopping, etc. hasn't your data already been collected and sold to data brokers? i'm not saying that i approve of this or like giving my ID but data brokers probably have plenty of information gathered on the average person even WITHOUT identification scans unless they are privacy conscious and take extra precautions to secure their personal details. there should be more restrictions on what companies are allowed to do with user data in general.

I'm sure all of our information is out there somewhere, but that doesn't mean I'm keen on giving it out to more places than I should or need to. Especially Discord of all places. I can understand if it's something important, but this is Discord we're talking about. I'm sure plenty of people will accept it anyway, but I really don't care to do that.

Also I seem to recall them having multiple data breaches and one that I read a few months ago (when it happened) So that also doesn't really make me rushing to give out my information to them.

It sounds like you could continue using Discord even without the verification, so I would probably go with that. I have privacy concerns since this seems like a good way for hackers to get your personal information. Discord is the only way I have to get in touch with certain communities and people, and I am worried this might cause some to leave.

Bad adults don't usually gain access to kids on the platform through the adults only channels/servers that these moves aim to block kids from but it's the fake reason they have used to justify the collection of user data and enforcement of the dangerous digital ID movement that Palantir and tech robber barons have been pushing for. Dying internet theory is looking more true every day.

Deleting the app soon and sticking to Telegram/WhatsApp from now on. Discord will be replaced by another chat program soon enough. I'm old enough to have migrated from MsM, to IRC, to Skype, to Teamspeak, to Discord, and now to whatever comes next. Nothing new but I definitely have a lot of great creative servers with great memories archived so it's going to be difficult.

Also the "toolkit" is invasive Spyware and shouldn't even be legal.

I dread the upcoming update, but I will most likely use it as an opportunity to not use those kinds of apps as often. I tend to get hooked on them and have them open for several hours a day at the cost of my mental health. Most of the people I know migrating from the app in the coming weeks will force me to move on from Discord and I'll have to accept losing some friendships and finding alternative ways to stay in touch with the others.

I moderate a Pokémon forum and with each passing day it seems more obvious that we'll have to move to an alternate app to keep the community alive outside of the website. When that day comes, I'll install the app we'll end up using and only use it for maybe two or three communities. This is to prevent me from forming emotional attachments to too many servers and letting them eat up all of my free time.

As for the update itself... I'm not too surprised it's happening. Social media companies have always been bad when it comes to tracking user data and now Discord is being more transparent about it. I refuse to submit a photo of my ID when it's quite obvious I am in my mid twenties and I don't want shady companies like Palantir to have any more information than they already have. I'd rather quit an app I've used for over seven years than watch it decline more and more.

I'm pissed off that when I finally start getting a chance to learn things I want and do a bunch of other stuff in life the Internet is turning to hell. Just going to cut a lot of rambling about my situation, but I am someone who had no IRL friends growing up so I know what growing up on the Net is like and I disapprove

"oh companies already have your data" So just even more of it is okay? More vulnerabilities etc? Dawg I don't even post pictures of my face to anyone. Because my camera is probably scanning it anyway, because cameras are everywhere outside, should I just go share it with everyone? It's not like you can't find out who anyone on this thread is but are people really spreading these false equivalencies? Stop. That line of logic needs to stop. It's been proven time and time again that these kinds of vectors become targets when people want them and larger concentrations like this are going to be very wanted targets, literally this same app had this problem last year.

It's absolutely embarrassing to have grown up being told not to put my personal data onto anything online only to see a lot of the same people who did, or would have told me that, have fully detailed Facebook accounts or full name needlessly tied to things, and no or minimal concern with these overreaches

Anyway Discord can suck it, I'll use it with no age verification, luckily for me I already moved on from 18+ communities for me but unlucky that now my hand is forced and the opportunity is gone. Me not being directly affected =/= no problem, and I am very much indirectly affected. So much for sharing and selling a lot of the art that I wanted to! Like, when it comes to anatomical studies too, what do I do wrt that? This hurts my goddamn artist soul, back to just finding hiding spaces. Everyone I know with 18+ spaces is going to be much more hush about them now, it's lucky I have a few good friends so I have a bit of a foot in the door there but if I was just an adult using Discord for the first time then I probably wouldn't even have gotten to know these people. And it's just back to this daisy chain nonsense know a guy, who knows a guy, who knows a guy...

As for children on the Internet sad to say I've seen so many just lie and use workarounds to get into inappropriate spaces anyway I think that will always happen, I think people are unwilling to face some things on the Internet are actually good for kids (as in: educational and safe space content, absolutely NOT 18+ stuff, don't even start)- these regulations inevitably hit those, see youtube in aus, and will be used against minority groups- and this is a case parents should be parenting and mods should be moderating,

"but parents don't have time" as always, the problem goes back to the oligarchy bleeding us dry and leaving us without recreational time. And if you don't want the responsibility I'mma be blunt, don't have children because this is now your obligation and they will try to workaround regardless of laws. Society in general needs reform lol

"but we can't, that's too large of an issue" Look, I don't know what to do. But this is not it.

Better first step / attempt / solution, and my best bet as to "we should do this instead": let us control our algorithms. But there's no money in that and it would actively impede the oligarchy, which is why we don't get it. Isn't it rich that all these discussions about inappropriate content and misinformation are only about children... here I am watching my failure of a dad complain about "the homos" on the phone and unironically believing racist rhetoric while I'm in the same room. He'll call POC slurs all day, no hesitation, and I think the only reason he won't say the F-Slur in front of me is that he knows he will face my retribution. I WONDER HOW AN ADULT CAN BELIEVE THESE THINGS AND IF THEY DESERVE ANY PROTECTION OR CONTROL FROM IT. I WONDER IF PERHAPS ANY COMPANIES MANIPULATED PEOPLE AND DESERVE PUNISHMENT FOR PROLIFERATING HATE AND BIGOTRY

but like always, populace footing the bill for the oligarchies, and we can't even complain without people going "oh but things already suck anyway what's the problem"

^ my angriest post on this site ever probably. this sucks.

hopefully my friends or most of them will also make stoat and matrix accounts, which i intend to do as backup. the problem with just switching from discord is that the entire point is to connect with other people, so if the people you know aren't switching with you, then you get nothing
