This may affect the forum, so I am wondering how people feel about the upcoming Discord requirements of proving your age through official identification scans, or scanning your face for proof of age?

I am all for making sure people are who they say they are, but it seems a bit extreme to put your personal identity out there, especially after Discord has been hacked before.

Discord is used by many members here, including community events.

What do we do?

I hate it for many reasons, and it feels like a repeat of Roblox asking for your face for age verification (and no, I haven't done it either, I'd rather stay without chat). The privacy concerns in both cases can't be ignored. Your face will probably sold to some database without your consent eventually in my opinion.

I didn't know that was a thing. Just way for them to get more information on us. No thanks. If that's what's going to happen I'll gladly leave Discord.

I have been living under a rock and was unaware of this until I saw the thread.

That said, I agree with RoxiePico, especially with the part about Roblox. And it’s not just about selling data, I’m worried the face ID thing might guess soneone’s age group wrong and then it would be insanely hard for that user to change it back to something more accurate. I remember that happening to one of my friends…

Also, idk what alternatives for Discord are out there since I see some people are already set on quitting. I know there’s Slack, but that one is for businesses. And Guilded (targeted at gaming communities) got discontinued.

I live in a country where this is already the norm online, so I'm not too surprised to be honest. I'm not saying I like it, but I got over my outrage on websites requiring this a while back.

Selfie verification is my preferred method, government ID I dislike, credit card checks I refuse.

Back when it was just face verification I would hold up a photo of master actor Robert Duvall and that was enough to get me anywhere I needed to be.
Saw a video today of a mad lad using Garry’s Mod assets to do the entire process and get approved. There will always be a way around it if you’re creative.

apart of me doesn't understand the outrage specifically for this. i know companies are using child safety measures as a front for data collection but if you're on the internet doing anything really, like posting to social media, online shopping, etc. hasn't your data already been collected and sold to data brokers? i'm not saying that i approve of this or like giving my ID but data brokers probably have plenty of information gathered on the average person even WITHOUT identification scans unless they are privacy conscious and take extra precautions to secure their personal details. there should be more restrictions on what companies are allowed to do with user data in general.

I'm sure all of our information is out there somewhere, but that doesn't mean I'm keen on giving it out to more places than I should or need to. Especially Discord of all places. I can understand if it's something important, but this is Discord we're talking about. I'm sure plenty of people will accept it anyway, but I really don't care to do that.

Also I seem to recall them having multiple data breaches and one that I read a few months ago (when it happened) So that also doesn't really make me rushing to give out my information to them.

So does TBT have plans for this if it locks out a lot of users from using Discord unless they comply?

It sounds like you could continue using Discord even without the verification, so I would probably go with that. I have privacy concerns since this seems like a good way for hackers to get your personal information. Discord is the only way I have to get in touch with certain communities and people, and I am worried this might cause some to leave.
