Opinion on catchphrases spreading?

This has been a thing villagers did since the first Animal Crossing game. And this sort of thing happens in real life. When it comes to Animal Crossing, they take some phrases people say in real life to fit with the current trends or whatever. This isn't exclusive to Animal Crossing, either. Some other Nintendo games have done this. Lucina saying, "Come at me," Pit saying, "Swag," a villager in New Horizons saying, "I'm making a thing." I remember a Call of Duty game with zombie Nazis having a Russian dude say, "Badass." I'm not really sure someone from the 1940s was using that word. Anyway, this really isn't something to get worked up over. People often conform to stupid trends and lingo.

So my villagers have yet to share catchphrases but they always share nicknames for me. Zucker decided to call me Burrito and now Sprinkle also calls me Burrito. I like being Burrito.

I despise it.

Once I made Plucky's catchphrase "hun" .... it was ok, but i wanted only plucky to say it... and Agnes copied her... so i reported Agnes... she stopped.... only to pick up genji's 'phrase "otaku" which was even WORSE. Then she picked up Audie's, "foxie" which was just no

then i trapped her in 2 pitfall seeds

anway rn her catchprase is Pigboi. Then frickin Coco AND Tammi copied her. So now i have a bunch of idiots running around saying really stupid stuff lmao

Also, I wholeheartedly disagree that "all of the Uchi's are lesbians". fight me on it but not here i dont wanna get in trouble xd

I am used to it happening from nl, it doesnt bother me and it can be funny sometimes when one villager picks up a phrase that doesnt suit them. I change it when they ask for a new one but i dont really care.

I'd rather my mouse villager not go "muuuuuurrrrr duuuuurrrrrrr" but I'm not gonna beat my head about it.

When I found out, this kind of bothered me. I wanted to give my villagers different catchphrases to match desserts like what I did in new leaf but I feel like it spreads faster in new horizons that I just end up keeping their original ones. :(

It's kind of annoying. Snake was my starting Jock and I decided to give him the catchphrase colonel, as a reference to Snake from Metal Gear Solid. It somehow found its way to Annalisa...multiple times, even though I complained to Isabelle. The reference doesn't really work with anyone other than Snake, so yeah, not great. That situation's resolved now since Snake was replaced by Ribbot, but now Annalisa uses "fam" since I haven't had many catchphrase inquiries from villagers and that's the first dumb thing that came to mind when asked by one of them. She's just one of a few of my villagers who says it. Not the best thing to have spreading around the island, but it could be worse.

It's probably better to go for catchphrases that are more general than individual, since the likelihood of someone else picking it up is there.

It’s the worst.

Not only does it make no sense, it’s just lame for the player’s experience. Case in point: I have Ribbot on my island right now. Since he’s a machine, I changed his catchphrase to ‘Beep Boop’. Sorta cute, right? Well, now freakin’ Marshal, Daisy AND Sherb have started saying Beep Boop too. Why? I dunno, ‘cuz they’re morons, I guess.

I dislike the catchphrases spreading, especially since I love personalizing them! But on the other hand I do think it's funny so I'm not really stressing over it.
The other day Ruby and Boris were talking, and Ruby was mentioning to Boris about trying her catchphrase "bunbun". Naturally Boris picked it up, and it may be jarring for a grumpy cranky pig to suddenly say "bunbun", but I also find it funny thinking about how he's probably saying it just to be 'hip' and get in with the times.

To me, I think its fine but its funny when someone adopts a catchphrase.
I gave Raymond his original catchphrase back "crisp" and guess what happened?
Chief, a new villager moved in a few days prior this event has taken "crisp" as his catchphrase.
I got seriously confused, and was laughing internally.
I did get a little mad though, I like Chief's original catchphrase "harrumph".

Like others, I think it's odd and inconsistent that they ask if it's okay to use a nickname they've heard about, but yet don't ask before they start using another animal's catchphrase. On my island, I gave...someone (I forget who, thanks to this "automatic spreading") the catchphrase "royal-gold" and now mostly all of them use it! (I read about the problem before I did that, so I used "royal gold" knowing it would spread.

It would be nice if Nintendo patched in a new question where they'd say that they heard a cool catchphrase and would love to use it, but need permission first. At least then I'd know what animals should and shouldn't use a given catchphrase.

I guess it makes sense that they wouldn’t ask you if they could say a word someone else is saying, but they don’t say their catchphrase that much so I wouldn’t really care

I don't enjoy it, at all.

Frustrating when you give a villager a phrase only meant for them and someone else says jt

I don’t really care about it, but I’d prefer if it didn’t happen. I’d like to give a character a catchphrase without thinking about what my entire island sounds like using it
