Personally? In my eyes? No. It's ridiculous how much people are willing to pay for a pixilated villager. NMT that are above 700 sometimes in the thousands, with people trying to sell him on eBay for real cash? No. That's just sad imo.
Raymond is awesome. He's worth it like every other villager but he is not worth that much in my eyes. To other players? Perhaps, but not to me at least.
I feel like for a smug, he's significantly above average. But compared to villagers of all personalities, I would personally rank him as average to below average (for me). See, I really like happy and cheerful-looking villagers. Because he has a naturally down-turned mouth, he looks unhappy to me - it's the same reason why I'm not interested in Marshall. So, I wouldn't really be interested in having Raymond on my island long-term.
I might adopt him if I ran across him just because he *is* pretty good for a smug, but I would probably just get his photo then let him go. In all, I don't know that I would say he's overrated, but I would definitely say that he's over-priced.
Personally he's not a fav of mine and while I think there's way too much hype for him, I understand why there is. He's got heterochromia, is the first villager to have that, and I think the main reason besides those things is...well he reminds me of Marshal. And when Marshal debuted he had nearly the same amount of hype around him. They give me the same vibes pretty much.

I do think he is overhyped in the sense that people are paying lots of real money for him! I have Raymond on my Island and spent a lot of NMT to get him. So far I have no regrets and can see why there is a lot of hype! I will mention I have Marshal on my Island too and prefer him quite a lot. If I had to choose between them I would easily pick that adorable little squirrel with the grumpy face.
I wouldn’t mind him normally. He’s cute and quirky. But I think what made me dislike him was always seeing him over and over on other people’s islands. He lost his luster for me after that. I’m kinda just sick of seeing him everywhere lol
Oh man, I remember that I got Raymond through the campsite as my 1st camper. Then after I restarted about 3 times I found him with extreme luck. I mean, he's cool but I would prefer other smugs.
As I had him 3 times in my islands he just doesn't put a smile on my face. Must be because everyone adores him that he isn't "Special". I'd rather have a living cheese shaped like a mouse than a cat with glasses with the chrom-thingamajig.
But of course, you should only get him if you REALLY like him. Getting him because of popularity is not much of a good thing and you'd most definitely be like the rest of the players who has an island full of popular villagers who only got them by the fact that they are popular and want to be "Trendy"
(Which reminds me on the fact that cottage core islands are extremely common and i'm not a fan of those towns.)
I voted "I hate him so much". There will always be "popular" villagers. I know that. But his cultish following...I just can't. Hopefully "shiny new toy" phase dies down and I can hear less about him
I don't get all the fuss about this one villager, to be honest.
Since I joined this board, his name pops up in thread titles more than any other, to the point where it's kind of obnoxious. Why this one character would elicit such strong reactions one way or another is a mystery to me, especially when there are 400+ others to talk about.
I mean...he's a cat.
This game includes a dragon, a white tiger, octopi, robots, a mammoth, a phoenix, a yeti...and people are going crazy about a cat.
I don't really think he's worth all the hype, bit that is because I am not vibing with his office style. I am playing this game to forget about real life and don't like to be reminded about work/studies :')
I think he's alright. I like his design, especially the heterochromia, and I think he's definitely one of the better smug villagers. I could see myself having him on an island if it weren't for all the other cat villagers I like better.
I really loved him when I saw the new villagers, he stood out to me cause I love cats and thought his design was cute but I decided I wanted to have variety in species on my island and Mitzi is one of my absolute favourite villagers so she took the cat spot. Worked out cause I came to really love my first camper Shep and Zell is another of my absolute favourites and I wouldn't want to have 3 smugs.
People who hate on him just because he's popular bothers me a little. Like let people like who they like you don't have to agree with them, there's no reason to go after people who do like him.

Yes and no. He showed up as my forced camper and I didn't really want him, but he really grew on me and he's now one of my favourite villagers on my island! I adore him.
However I think considering the hype means people either worshipping him or making hate videos on him, and selling him for hundreds (if not thousands) of NMTs, then no, he is not worth the hype, no one is.
Raymond is definitely worth the hype. However, I didn’t know this until I had him in my town. I don’t like that the insane demand for him is turning people away from him... Or that people act like they don’t like him just to be contrary to the popular opinion...
Honestly if I had to pick one you villager that’s worth all the hype I would definitely say remember Dom. I have Raymond on my island and honestly I really do like him I think that his level of conversation is really unique and just in comparison to a lot of other villagers I’ve had to bring something new to the game so from that perspective I really do like him
