is nintendo setting us up for more animal crossing content with this update?

the timing of the update is so out of the blue, i know they also did the welcome amiibo update with ACNL but that was moreso to sell amino cards during nintendo’s amiibo surge.

part of me thinks this was designed to get the attention of the animal crossing community and we might get another dlc, update or even a switch 2 exclusive spin off game in the near future.

Surely there'll be a new game within the next 5 years, but I think this is just part of their launch year for the Switch 2. They put in the work to justify releasing a physical Switch 2 version, I think after this the team will continue focusing on the next title.

I have always thought being version 2.08 something was always an off number for me, and I have always wondered if they would make it a whole number. Maybe they waited for a specific time, this time where people were starved for more Animal Crossing content.
Doesn't mean I don't think we're that close to a new game yet. I never expected it this early for the new switch.

I really hope so. I'd be fine going without a new AC game for like another 5 years so long as they started updating ACNH again.

I still can't get over the fact that they said there would be no more big updates and yet here we are getting a big update? Like how does that work? Why did they change their minds?

I hope we get another update or DLC later. I have no issues with them keeping NH longer — even if that means getting the new AC later on. In any case, I don’t expect a new entry at least until 2027 or so

I'm willing to bet they pushed the Switch 2 out too early. Which is why we've gotten so many 'Switch 2' upgraded games. Nintendo is so infamous for this. The GameCube, Wii and Wii U all suffered because of this. Even the Switch sort of, but at least they had a few good launch games to hold it over unlike GameCube that only had Luigi's Mansion or the Wii U only had Nintendo Land.

They didn't have any plans to do more updates. We have to be realistic about that. There's no way they could anticipate 5 years into the future and know the Switch 2 would release and need filler to hold it over until they could bring out something substantial on the system. They took advantage of the unprecedented times and how much money this game made them to the point that I think they stopped their planned updates way before Nov. 2021 and only when consumers finally pushed back did they drop a 'final update' and went radio silent. They were literally starving us for updates when Pocket Camp was eating good to the point people were going feral over the Popsicle update lol.

I feel like if it wasn't for all the chaos that was the early 2020s that we would've seen an entirely different game (and probably better) that didn't coast on trying times and lockdown and people wouldn't have been so receptive of it.

tlrd this is just their way of making a 'new' game for the Switch 2 without all the extra work. I'm still going to play it and probably love it depending on what is brought over, but really how hard would've it been for them to give us bulk crafting, having flowers and other stuff in storage and all that other stuff been to implement back when this game was still getting barebone updates?

It's likely to help promote Nintendo Switch 2 sales as well as sell more copies of Animal Crossing to those who yet to own it, and are getting a Switch 2 for Christmas.

I do feel ACNH deserves more than it has been given by Nintendo, so I'm glad it's getting some more content, and would love to see even more to come.

I really hope so.
I haven't bought a switch 2 yet, since I have an oled... I was really waiting on a switch 2 animal crossing console, but I suppose we're not getting one.

The higher-ups told them to update one of the biggest Switch games for the Switch 2 and the AC team was like "can we do content 👉👈" and the higher-ups were like "yeah, sure".

Well, nothing is going to ever end on a whole number. Each of the 2.0.x updates fixed bugs, and we're not ending on 3.0.0, we're likely to end on 3.0.x, because of a handful of bug fixes.

actually yeah that sounds very plausible!! I hope Nintendo lets the AC team do at least a little bit more content after this big update 😖

maybe? i hope they do but i also would like a new game eventually... hopefully with more content on launch than what ACNH had bc i was disappointed in comparison to new leaf how much that was to do, it felt like the game wasnt finished when it was released and they promised updates then didnt pull through for long

My theory is, optimistically, no. Most of the things coming in are sort of things we have some version of already — like the hotel being a tiny version of the DLC. My hope is that this is because they are saving the extra, excitingly fresh, things for a new game. But I'm either way beyond thrilled about the update and am considering calling in sick that day from work…

I'm sure there will be a proper new switch 2 animal crossing game in the future, but I wouldn't look too heavily into the latest new horizons update as meaning anything immediate

really, nintendo's just been doing switch 2 upgrades for just about all their notable switch 1 titles, so it stands to reason that this is more of the same

GameCube that only had Luigi's Mansion

smh, this super monkey ball slander

also, this is really neglecting how melee was out just over 2 weeks later. not a launch title, sure, but given how this was out just in time for the holiday season, honestly probably counts for far more

If they pushed another update thats paid dlc (like the island minigames update) thats such easy money for Nintendo. If they push 1 or 2 mini updates or even small dlc items that are paid content, they get payment until a new animal crossing is out. I think it makes sense for Nintendo to get some cash while they arent selling a new animal crossing for a few years etc. I am just trying to understand how it will tie into the switch 2 until a new game comes out. They obviously need more switch 2 sales, and the only way they'll boom with switch 2 sales is a new animal crossing game, or reallllyyy good dlc for only switch 2 users.

heck, I know a lot of us wouldn't mind spending $5 for a 7-11 set of furniture etc

I really don't get how they didn't go with a mini-games DLC. They would've made good buck if they wanted to.

Honestly? I'm keeping my expectations really low. I didn't expect 3.0 to appear randomly, but we'll see? I don't see another update after this one.

For the most part, no. 3.0 is very much the "we're putting (insert big, synonymous with Nintendo series here) on Switch 2 so there's something there in the first year" update, but given it's fairly bite-sized in comparison to 2.0, I don't necessarily think it's a sign that Nintendo intends to do anything major with NH in future, more a sign that Nintendo wanted something from each of their big franchises in the first year of Switch 2.

I'm holding out hope that we'll get a smaller update for the 25th anniversary of AC in April that adds in some AC-themed furniture (similar to the furniture you got when you scanned the AC amiibo figures in Welcome amiibo... I still want Isabelle's winter jumper!), or at the very, very least they continue to update the Nintendo dream island... but I think this is it until the next AC game (and that's at the very earliest, next Christmas)
