I'm thinking about breeding a Torkoal that knows Clear Smog. Unfortunately, you have to chain breed. I don't know how chain breeding works so I typed some stuff into Google asking how that would work and one of the responses was a GameFAQs thread.

In this thread, someone said the easiest way to get a Torkoal that knows Clear Smog is to breed it with Smeargle. To my knowledge, Smeargle and Torkoal are NOT in compatible egg groups. So what I want to double check is this: Can a male Smeargle and a female Torkoal breed to pass down any egg moves that the Smeargle has learned?

Smeargle and torkoal are both listed in the field egg group, should work.
