I haven't played NH since September of 2020, and remember the villager interactions and dialog being really flaccid and bland. I also dont remember ever being asked about catchphrases/greetings/etc. Has any of this been changed? My friend is getting super addicted and I'm considering reinstalling.

I think the dialogue is pretty good, you just have to grind past their required boring daily stuff, which, for some reason, they prioritize before saying more interesting things. You might have to talk to a villager three or four times before they stop talking about what you did yesterday, and what events are coming up, and what buildings or objects might be near them, but they do have more interesting dialogue buried under there. It's far from ideal, but at least the other, more interesting dialogue is in the game, rather than not present at all.

And they ask about catchphrases and greetings when you become better friends with them. In my experience, takes a couple of weeks or more of talking to them every day and giving them wrapped gifts for them to start pinging you for those things.
