Elusive fish/bugs!

Ooh yeah I have a couple friends who have similar experiences. Although other friends can catch all fish fine and without using crazy amount of bait too! So I'm really confused. I don't mind flying to a friend's island to catch fish but if spawn rates are truly like this on certain islands then it really sucks for those who don't have online services

Yeeeeah. I don't think my friends even have one yet. I could have sworn my boyfriend caught a gold trout in my town since I remember jokingly telling him he stole my fish, but after all the fishing I did I'm not so sure it was my town. I tried a bit in my boyfriend's town and another friend's town and I didn't get it in either of their towns either.
I'd give ya a nmt if I could try in your town for a bit at some point.

I had the hardest time catching a marlin. During the time, I did get a tuna but my friend and I were just farming clams constantly. I did eventually get it.

I haven't gotten the string fish though. My friend's clifftop areas suck for fishing. I'll just have to wait till they're in season on my island.

I didn't have a hard time with any of those fish. I think I caught my marlin in a friend's town though. I guess it's sorta luck based.

Try to to go on an island tour with ponds or cliffs and rivers! I couldn't catch golden trout and stringfish on my island, but on nook islands, the spawn rates are crazy, you don't need to use bait, just to scare away any fish that's the wrong size. I caught 4 golden trouts and 2 stringfishes on the last day of march when I was searching for stringfish!

Are sturgeons even still in season? I know they aren't year round. I'm wondering if chances of catching certain fish also rise and fall during certain seasons.

It’s not in season for northern hemisphere, not sure for southern.

I'm from the southern hemisphere and they'll be available until september. The weirdest thing is that the game started spawning river fish in my river mouth, previously the only fish spawning there was the sturgeon.

Saw the same thing yesterday. I don't know which fish it was (didn't even try to get it as I was trying to find a football fish and saw the small shadow on the river mouth as I was running on the beach), but I was like, the same size as a horse mackerel.

I used so much bait to catch the golden trout... and then I caught it almost fir try when I visited my friends island for it QuQ it was night time, idk if they are easier to catch at night, but yeah

The golden trout is indeed really frustrating to catch. I've only found 2. I don't know how I'll have the patient to collect 2 more so I can give them to CJ for the model.

I feel like this was intentionally done on nintendo's part to combat sturgeon cheese spawns

Golden trout was easy. I raised part of my river, caught every fish that was about the right size, and got it within a day without bait.

Coelacanth was caught baitless on my first rainy day, then never again but I never looked for it either...

The barreleye took me maybe an hour of running along the beach catching small-sized fish. Not sure why anyone would waste bait on that one either, there are plenty of small shadows to be found.

The tuna/marlin is the only one I had to use a bit of bait on because pier fish just hardly spawn on their own, I would guess around 40 were used total.

I already have all the new fish and bugs for May, so I don't consider those particularly rare either.

I did use some bait for the marlin/tuna, but it took me less than ten bait to get each one. I didn't have to hunt the barreleye, I just happened upon it early in the game.
I haven't done much hunting for the may fish yet. Just was really trying to get this stupid trout.
