On TBT ZetaBoards/InvisionFree (aka "1.0") there was a smaller limit, but I don't remember what it was. But it was changed and most of the time the limit was bigger: 150x150. It was slowly moved closer to 100 x 100 on vBulletin because I think it looks better.
