I haven’t even tried to catch one to be honest. I was very serious in trying to catch all the bugs in August... but I have been feeling a little burn out this month. I’m hoping the new update gets me excited to play again.

I did adopt real a pair of real kittens this month 🤔 definitely haven’t been gaming as much since I brought them home.

When it was in season, I caught the thing by chance without thinking what was near the docks that day. Idk if this means anything but I had a friend over on my island today, and she caught the stringfish, snow crab, and spider crab in one go. Maybe you'll have better odds catching rare fish on a friend's island?

I do believe it was the hardest one for me to catch...but, I got one back when it was first available. Just took a lot of attempts. I did catch one the other day, too. All together, I've probably caught 4 or 5 of them at this point...but, that's still a very small amount...considering how much fishing I do.

You can only get them on a pier, so I went to the pier with a bunch of bait. It wasn’t instantaneous, but I didn’t have too much trouble.

I normally would fish near the dock using baits before auto save kicks in. I will restart the game and repeat the process until catching it. :) In that way, I can conserve the bait. This is how I caught those rare fishes like the Mahi Mahi.

Yeah you might have a bad spawn rate on your island :( Back when Stringfish was in season for NH, I used 400+ bait to catch it but it never appeared. I was able to catch plenty of golden trout. My friend had a similar experience that was opposite to mine, where they could only catch stringfish and no golden trout. I was able to catch a Mahi-Mahi randomly (wasn't looking for it!) but when I was hunting for Blue Marlin it just never appeared so I decided to catch it at my friend's island as well.

@Pyoopi 's island is magical and has plentiful fish. Compared to my 400+ bait for Stringfish, I caught this in under 20.

You’re like me... but mine is with the Tuna. I’ve used so much bait to no avail. Sorry you can’t catch that blasted Mahi Mahi. :u

Mahi-Mahi took me about... 240-270 bait to catch? Nothing in comparison to the 631 bait it took me to catch the giant trevally. Yes, I kept count. I went that freakin' insane trying to catch that thing last month.

I gave up trying to catch that after using 500+ for the giant trevally. Animal crossing is suppose to be about relaxing and enjoying a slower pace in life. I can’t be bothered grinding for fish or bugs anymore.

i actually didn’t have too much trouble with the mahi-mahi; i managed to catch 3 of them in the time that i spent trying to catch the giant trevally, which took ages. unfortunately, some critters are harder to find for others and it all sort of boils down to luck. good luck c’:

I got both the trevally and the mahi mahi pretty quickly after they became available by using some bait (I think it was less than 40?). Maybe I was just lucky, but it is definitely possible. I hope you get it soon!

bait is your best friend! i did find i got a couple mahi mahi when i hit big fish island while island hopping, so maybe that would be your best bet! but also, it's okay to take your time filling up your encyclopedia to keep from burning out !!!

i gave up on fishing in general tbh... the rng with getting the right fish and/or burning through tons of fish bait to watch for the shadow you need is too tedious for my liking

I havent even start trying but I heard from my friend that it is very hard even using lots of fish baits.

I would personally have to say that the Giant Trevally was the most difficult fish for me to catch.
It took me such a long time that I took a screenshot and added these specific words to it to show that I was finally done.
(I hope that people get the reference)

Yup this one was super hard for me to catch too. I spent forever crafting fish bait and fishing on my dock and until I just gave up. Luckily I was able to catch one randomly a couple weeks later.

I have had zero luck catching any of the rare fish at my pier and that’s with using bait. I almost believe that fishing at my pier is broken but I’m pretty sure I’ve just been really unlucky. :/

I still have not caught the Mahi-Mahi either! I’ve used at least 100+ bait and still nothing! One time I was diving and I saw a big shadow near the pier so I got out the water to go catch it, but I didn’t know I was gonna scare the fish away (I wasn’t even that close to it but I guess I was close enough) and now I always wonder if that could have been my mahi mahi or just another sea bass! I guess I’ll never know now! (ಥ﹏ಥ) I haven’t given up hope yet, but very close..

Mahi-Mahi took for me about 20-30 bags of bait to catch, but the giant trevelly was caught accidentally, during the rainy day, just thought it is another common fish in the sea... and then: surprise!
