I think Julian and Marshal are popular, but not necessarily favourites. They are appreciated for their own respective users, sort of that villager that is cool to have around but not always the top favourite.

This is an interesting assessment! And it holds true for me; I'm hoping for Julian (for his unique design, interior decorating, and house exterior -- all fitting for my town), but my sentimental favorite is Melba. I bet a lot of people are like this as well, having favorites from past games, but wanting a flashy new chara for their New Leaf town.

I'm actually really happy that the rankings don't match what they do on websites. (I'm on Bell Tree and ACC) it's nice to see who's actually popular outside the scope of these websites. I know Biskit isn't super popular here (even though I love him to pieces) but he ranked higher than Ankha or Julian on the Wii U Plaza. Daisy the normal dog ranked pretty high too she's such a cutie as well.
