Steel and cotton

I realize I have an over abundance of paper and preserves. However, I never have enough steel or cotton. I, finally, got the main item for two scrapbooks which is exciting, but cannot make all the items for the animals to come. Any way to get more steel. At this rate, it will take me two months.

Have animals that reward cotton and steel at your campsite. If they're a high enough level, you'll often have more than enough if you keep talking to them. Other than that, your only options are through maps, quests, quarry, or using your My Nintendo point.
