Would you have picked a different hemisphere?

Do you think the updates are unfair toward Southern Hemisphere players?

Not sure why I'm here but I guess I like the discussions on here hehe!

I'm not entirely sure what I'd do if I were from a different hemisphere than the one they release the updates from.
I would totally feel a bit bummed out if the video were about like being able to roast chestnuts on the campfire and the video featured people in sweaters drinking hot cocoa and such. Like I'm excited for it, but also I won't get to experience it at its best right away.

That said... Before NH you had NO CHOICE.
Now you have a choice! I do think they should have added a disclaimer that their updates and news would follow Norther Hemisphere seasons, but it's still an improvement.
And if you don't think so, you can still chose to play Norther hemisphere. (Sure, it implies resetting so it's not that easy... I get that)

I really do get your point, but I find it a bit unfair to say that Nintendo shouldn't have given the choice to begin with... They tried to be more inclusive, and while there's still room for improvement, it's better than not recognizing some people live in different hemisphere AT ALL, no?

Although in the end... Let your voices be heard and let's hope they learn the lesson for the next AC game!
Either take out the choice, or release more inclusive update (or with different titles) so part of the community doesn't have to experience things so differently.

Let us not forget that everything a big company like that one does is a marketing decision though, so as someone previously stated before, they're going to target the bigger market segment for sure. It is unfair, yes. But you know. Money money money

Condescending much? Your poll was provoked by the name Nintendo gave to their update. I'm just calling a spade a spade.

The entirety of your post I was responding to was condescending toward people.

But yes, that is partially what this thread is about. In my opinion the name they chose
and the presentation of the new content shows bias. And I think it’s valid for players to vent about that, and interesting for others to discuss.

I decided to go with both lol

I first started in the Northern Hemisphere as always. But after 4 days or so in... I decided I didn't like the placement of my resident services... So i reset my town... But when I reset... i went with Southern Hemisphere (Only to find out sharks stopped spawning in March.. doh, which didn't matter as much cuz i started TTing like crazy cuz of it)

Today I am going to be starting a 2nd island... which will be a Northern Hemisphere island, where I prob won't TT except for a few buildings here and there or to move a villager out quicker to gift someone.

No, I like having the seasons change in the game with real life, so I would not have picked a different hemisphere. Even if one hemisphere is more catered too, I like having the game reflect the weather I am experiencing outside.

With the way they decided to roll out content they have to only choose one and not both.

If they released seasonal fitting stuff for both, their plan for year 1’s update is cut down to two instead of four. And that’s if we call Lief and Diving “seasonal updates”, even though both hemispheres are getting them and they’re not season exclusive. It’s more of a marketing thing than anything. They could have release them whenever, regardless what season it is, it’s the same gameplay loop.

Not directed at you, rezberri, but for the love of all that is good in this world, do not drag "privilege" into a discussion about the naming convention and release date of video game content, as it cheapens the current context of the word.

It does not cheapen it at all. While this issue is obviously very minor in comparison, it can still be seen as coming down to the same thing: people in a privileged position not seeing or understanding the situation from somebody else’s point of view. People not accepting that others are negatively affected by something, just because they don’t experience those affects.

not exactly negatively affected, it's not like they omitted SH from getting the update, sure it sucks you weren't in the update video but you're getting the exact same content.

Yes, I do agree it’s still better, and I can definitely see how it would be worse to have the option taken away—I would never actually suggest that! What I really wanted to emphasize is the idea of seeing something through fully. Nintendo definitely has the ability to make both experiences equal, and they are currently not imo. I’m just calling them out for that.

Point 1: The update is called the Summer update, but then again, that's the current season of Japan, and Japan is where the HQ of Nintendo is, who are the ones who made the game. If I have a project right now, I have the right to call it my summer project.

Point 2: Diving isn't a summer only activity if we learned anything playing New Leaf.

Point 3: It's unconfirmed that the new Gulliver is summer only

Therefore, I still don't see what the problem is. It's not like Nintendo said "Summer update for Northern Hemisphere players!!! July 3rd! LULZ, Good luck Southern Hemispher players, y'all won't be seeing this content update for 6 months."

IRL People in the southern hemisphere celebrate Christmas in the summer. They don't cry "privilege" just because Christmas songs include the word "snow".

If people are saying they feel disappointed or ignored—that they are sad or irritated—that counts as being negatively affected, no?

Again, nobody is saying this is the end of the world, that Nintendo is evil, or that they’ll throw out the game. Something can be objectively unfair and still not be that big of a deal. I doubt anybody here is truly offended or devastated—just bummed.

That are no Christmas decorations in june, where did you get that from?
Christmas is in December everywhere, not just in the north

Pretty much what Unaware said, but I'll expand.

The traditions that were appropriated into Christmas were all celebrations of the Winter Solstice. Like bringing in and decorating evergreen trees is a celebration of fertility in the middle of winter, a tree that stays green during the winter was really significant back then.

Since I'm not religious anymore, the Christian context is completely gone for me, and celebrating the holiday in the middle of summer would make no sense to me. Just like celebrating Easter in autumn wouldn't make sense. Don't blame me, blame the ancient church fathers for basing their calendar around the Northern hemisphere seasons and Pagan traditions. Lol.

I think some of the disconnect here is maybe coming from a different perspective in terms of play style. For you, content is content. That’s all that matters for you. For lots of people though, the content is more enjoyable depending on whether they perceive it to fit or clash with the season. For me, the addition of diving is at least 50% more exciting now that it’s summer. If it had been in the game all along this wouldn’t be an issue. But since it’s being highlighted as the cool new thing to do, the setting does make a big difference to my experience. If it was added in my winter I’d still appreciate the addition, but I wouldn’t feel as hyped.

You don’t have to feel that way, and it’s fine if you don’t really get it. Just maybe try to get that people feel this way, and that to them it matters.

Got it!
Even for the religious, Jesus was not actually born in december, so it's just a date picked for the simbolic celebration

I believe May is "wedding season" because of religion, the month of Mary or something like that.

I actually looked it up because I was curious! You were really close! June is considered wedding season because of Juno who the month of June is named after. Juno is the protector of women in all aspects but especially in marriage and childbearing. More people probably know of Juno as the Greek Hera - wife of Zeus, goddess of love, marriage, and childbirth.

Yay for fun facts that probably nobody else but me cares about! It makes me wish I have found more of the classical statues from Redd now though. They always go really nice with the wedding furniture from the pictures I've seen.

And now for a completely unrelated note that I wandered in here to ask anyway:

For those of you in the southern hemisphere, how will you feel about the Jingle set coming in December since it will be summer in the game? Will having no snow on the ground be strange then? Will part of you be a tiny bit sad that there probably won't be any new summer-related items out for the updates then? Or will you just not care at that point?

I don't understand the problem at all. Yes, Nintendo obviously cater to the Northern Hemisphere players because that's where most people (and, by default, their players) live. However, that doesn't mean that you can't play the game or the new update unless your island is currently set in the summer. People in the Southern Hemisphere will get deep-sea creatures that we in the Northern Hemisphere won't be able to get until December.
Same thing applies to objects that have been present since launch. I'd love to get the Frozen set or the Harvest set (I don't know if those are the actual names), but I can't because it won't be fall or winter for a whole three more months.
I believe the problem dwells in that they labeled it a "Summer update", when that could've been avoided by labeling it a "July update", but the content will be in the game regardless of what hemisphere you play in. Also, there are many players who time travel, so I don't know what the problem is for them. If you time travel, you're going to be able to get everything in two days anyway lmao.

I do wish we got something, Brewster's Cafe would've been perfect to give us warm beverages to drink after we get hyperthermia in the ocean. It also kinda sucks that our winter is probably going to be worse/more empty feeling coz they'll do some huge Christmas Winter update in December.

That said I'm not too mad, Autumn imo is the best season for recpies, so we've had all the cool mushroom lamps and stuff. Plus we won't have Zipper ruining the cherry blossoms week.

Not unfair at all, I live in the Southern Hemisphere therefore my game is in the south. I have never experienced a white Christmas or any of that stuff that I was made to sit through in all the other past games I played so I’m really glad they made this a thing this time around. I’m happy to have the game reflect the weather in my real life, at least in terms of seasons.
It’s true that the updates favour the north but I absolutely beleive us in the south will still get the summer update and be able to enjoy it just as much after all, in new leaf we could still swim in winter and there were deep sea creatures that you could only collect in winter

Eh, I picked SH, and I don't mind. I don't think the different seasons take away from the events. Who cares if it is snowing when we get the wet suits? People swim during winter.

Plus, in October...we get the cherry blossoms without being bombarded by eggs. Sounds like a win to me.

the idea confused me💀 so nope, i stuck with my hemisphere to make it easy
