Would you have picked a different hemisphere?

Do you think the updates are unfair toward Southern Hemisphere players?

If it were winter here, and Nintendo released diving, I'd celebrate that regardless.

Another example: I desperately want Brewster and the Roost. I’d love to have them added as soon as possible. However, as a NH player I’d still be kinda bummed if Nintendo announced them in a July “Winter Update” which only highlights drinking hot beverages to stay warm. THIS is the experience the SH is getting.

Nothing has been announced for Brewster at this point. So it's not confirmed Brewster will be released in December. But I'd take Brewster in the summer any day, just as @tajikey would take diving in the winter. I'm not an avid coffee drinker IRL, but I don't drink coffee based on the outside temperature. I drink it as a morning routine/ritual. Getting Brewster in the game is the goal, not drinking coffee when it's cold out.

I think it's mostly just in the name. "Summer"-update when it's winter. But no one will really miss something. In New Leaf you could also dive in the winter if I'm not wrong.

Thereby... This summer season has nothing special. Yes some seashell diy's in balloons but that's it while the winter people can have fun with making a snowman-family :) But I wouldn't change it either way. I like it when it matches the weather outside. It's pretty hot her (ok...I don't like that) but it would be strange when there would be snow in the game.

Not saying it's good practice but I don't know why people are surprised...it's Nintendo. They will always cater to their Japanese audience and focus on them and Japan just happens to be in the Northern Hemisphere...I was honestly surprised they even gave the option for the Southern Hemisphere.

Like you said, even though I would prefer to get Brewster in the Fall or Winter, getting him in any season would be reason to celebrate.

While the updates are only syncing to NH seasons its not like SH is not getting them or will not be able to get them. An example is the summer shells DIYS. While it is summer in NH and NH can get the DIYS, once as it is Summer for SH they will be able to get the DIYs as well.

The real poll should have asked whether or not players would prefer diving be limited to the summer season only, meaning Northern Hemisphere has it now, while Southern Hemisphere has something else.

And as far as complaints go, this is all I see: "Hey, Nintendo, we Southern Hemisphere players say thanks but no thanks. We would rather a large update be locked to a season so that it makes sense. I mean, we have snow on the ground! Why would our virtual character with animal neighbors ever consider jumping into frigid cold water at this time of year?!?!"

Also, what is your character wearing while it's snowing, and should shorts be available at Able Sister's right now? It's clearly too cold to be wearing them, so why sell them? Same goes for summer. I wore a pair of ski pants the other day, but it's summer on my island! The travesty, the outrage, the tomfoolery!

And no, I am not speaking from a place of privilege, I'm speaking from a place of being a fan of the game. If it were winter here, and Nintendo released diving, I'd celebrate that regardless.
i agree with you that the poll doesn't really match the title, but that's it. frankly, it seems like you're making fun of and mocking people that have different opinions than your own while not even really looking into their argument and boiling it down to one little issue, while also making it seem insignificant. the issue isn't just that diving is being released in winter, but that in general the non-holiday events don't make much sense with the southern hemisphere's experience of seasons.

i think i can say with confidence that most people are content with diving being added; we all wanted more content for the game and we got it. but the fact that it was labelled as summer only just kinda shows how much afterthought they put in for the southern hemisphere. like they could have at least shown diving in the winter, but they just showed it in the summer. but please don't take me pointing this out as the only issue. @cocoacat has said that in the southern hemisphere, their "wedding season" is in November, which doesn't make sense that they got the wedding event in June. but southern hemisphere players cant just have the wedding event pushed to November for them, because then all these updates would literally only be for northern hemisphere players on the update release because that how much the updates so far have followed their "seasonal path". but like ive also said, if there are two different sets of things released for each hemisphere every update, then the plan of slowly released content goes out the window.

sure this is an insignificant issue in the scheme of things; it's just a game and we're all still playing it regardless of its issues. but when there's an issue some part of the community's having, their argument shouldn't be belittled. yes it's just seasons, but the only thing that was done for the southern hemisphere is just make their seasons match up with how that hemisphere actually experiences them and that's it. it's kinda like in mmos they add dude and lady gender options but then only ever rly release clothes for the ladies; sure less people may play as the dude character but that doesn't mean that they shouldn't get any representation. they, as paying customers, deserve nice outfits as well. but like ive said multiple times now, the solution is just hard to come across, but that doesn't negate any discussion being had.

As someone playing Northern, then yes I'd picked Southern since our season/real life season clash like hell and yeah that bug AND sakura season was a bad move, and you can wait with annoying summer fishes.

I would pick whichever hemisphere reflected where I actually live. It would be weird to have completely different weather than what I see outside.

I'm not trying to mock nor put anyone down, just letting you know how I subjectively view the complaints. Nintendo is based in Japan, and Japan is in the northern hemisphere, which means Japan is experiencing summer at this point in time. That doesn't mean they're selectively excluding the feelings of those that have their island set to the southern hemisphere, they're just naming it based on what the country (and largest part of the world by user base) is currently experiencing. Again, if they were in the southern hemisphere, and wanted to name it "Winter Update," I wouldn't feel excluded because my season is currently summer...seems silly.

Not directed at you, rezberri, but for the love of all that is good in this world, do not drag "privilege" into a discussion about the naming convention and release date of video game content, as it cheapens the current context of the word.

I think the big difference between now and then is that in New Leaf everybody actually did experience the seasons at the same time. In that sense, it was more acceptable for people’s real life season to not match up with the one in the game. Now with New Horizons, the game was specifically pitched as having equal representation for both parts of the world, but it seems like one is getting prioritized over the other. It’s a bit like...allowing people to choose between right- or left-handed scissors but then giving the right-handed people better materials to cut. Does that make sense? lol
Like, it’s great we have both options. But they should also both be treated equally.

Yeah it's true, but diving has always been a thing in Winter. I don't see why there being an option for different hemispheres should change this. It would make sense if diving was a Summer only event, but even people in the winter right now can dive, so it's really not one sided at all

I kept with mine and I don't envy people who got to experience fall and winter already. The updates seem pretty unfair anyway.

No, it doesn't make sense. If Nintendo gave one hemisphere priority over the other, then the northern hemisphere would have diving, and the southern hemisphere would have something different (what would be a large update tied specifically to Winter?). In this case, they're giving it to everybody at the same time. We both have access to the same scissors, and assuming those in the southern hemisphere have different creatures to dive for, we're cutting different material; not better, not worse. If Nintendo is at fault for anything, it's that they called it "Summer Update," except that they're in Japan, so are they really at fault for anything?

It's a very northern focused world... even the holidays in real life are mostly influenced by their origin, so Santa is still wearing a fur lined suit and Christmas cards often depict images of snow even if it's 90 degrees outside. What do eggs and rabbits have to do with fall? Little to nothing, but that's Easter here.

I think the game being out of Japan, you sort of have to expect that everything is coming from their perspective. That said, they should name updates based on the month and include clips of both hemispheres in whatever they release. I never thought of Brewster as only winter or fall themed and diving as well is a year round activity. It might be nice for them to release an ice cream shop along with Brewster, but that'd be twice as much content and I don't see them doing that. (Honestly if they want to release an ice cream shop in the middle of December, that's okay with me!)

Hi, Fey!! I dont think i haven seen you here in a while, It is good to see your posts again ❤
I am a northern hemisphere player but i dont need to imagine myself in place of northern hemisphere players to understand why some of them might feel a little left out. I think i would pick the hemisphere i live in regardless of the updates. I am honestly not surprised even a little that the updates seem to foucs on the northern hemisphere current season, though.

I'm sticking with Northern Hemisphere because I don't want to feel out of whack that my island is snowing while it's extremely hot from where I live.

As for the update content itself, I really don't know. The only difference I could think of is the creatures that you can catch depending on the season. Other than that, everyone will get to try out the diving mechanics. It's just that the experience will be different.

This poll is no less real just because it asks a question you don’t understand, don’t agree with or aren’t interested in *shrug*

The reason I chose this question for the poll is because I wanted the thread to be focused on whether or not people thought one hemisphere was getting more attention than the other. Your question would not address that in the same way.

I do think the updates fit the NH season better, but I wouldn't say it's unfair because it's still available for both. I get that updates fitting your current season in the game is more fun and it wasn't known before that updates will be this way, what I don't get is NH players who choose SH then complain about how the Christmas event would be in the summer... Christmas has always been in the summer in SH, if you don't want that then simply pick NH. It's not SH making no sense or whatever, it's just how it is in real life.

Condescending much? Your poll was provoked by the name Nintendo gave to their update. I'm just calling a spade a spade.

Considering the SH has seasonal items we don't have and get this update like,, what's there to complain about?

In all honestly, I know that the updates are obviously summer-y, but most people missed diving from NL. The mermaid set was also really desired. Now they're doing more stuff with Gulliver too. I don't understand why SH people are complaining. The diving stuff is permanent. The summer update isn't temporary like the Wedding event. It's like adding Leif and Redd.

I can't stand how people complained about the lack of stuff and now are complaining when they add it's because it's too summer-y. I really don't get it.
This is what I been saying!!
