Can we just clear a few things up



1. This is a game

2. Nintendo will NOT roll an update out ONLY for NH players or vice versa. Why the heck would they??? You can buy the summer item AND winter item from nook shopping so?

3. This is a GAME

4. If the game was released with diving, would the SH just not dive until summer? Don’t be ridiculous. So why is it an issue now.

5. YOU HAVE THE POWER TO PLAY ON ANY DATE YOU WANT TO PLAY ON.

7. You LITERALLY chose to have a SH at the beginning of the game? Nintendo didn’t force this upon you.

I'm more amazed your character can hold 40 whale sharks at once. Whale Sharks are said to weigh as much as 41,000 lbs (18597 kg). So 40 would be a whopping ‭1,640,000‬ lbs (743891 kg)

If it's curiosity, I can tell you I guess the majority of people would just prefer the update wall not called the summer update but the july update, or have seen some snow clips to be included, or a little wintery something on the update. But as you might have seen here we're a minority that apparently can't have an opinion or vent about this... lol when all we do here in this forum is vent and chat about little things in this game but oh well
Honestly I'm tired, it was not that big of a deal and the subject got out of hand

nobody said you can't have an opinion, people are just pointing out that you're overreacting. it's summer in japan, ergo it's called a summer update. why some insist on blowing that out of proportion is beyond me. similarly, the footage was all very likely NH oriented because the people who developed the trailer live there. again, nothing deep about it. considering that weather has no affect on any of the upcoming features, there was no reason whatsoever for them to go out of their way to TT to winter just so a handful of people feel better because there's suddenly snow in the background -- and of a water themed trailer no less.

Nintendo of Australia uploaded the same exact trailer video for the July 3rd update, and it showcases footage of diving during the Summer.

This is really urksome, since i'd imagine there are quite a few Australian/Southern Hemisphere players who don't watch the other Nintendo YouTube Channels who might be confused as to why it shows footage of Summer time during an update that is supposed to be playable during July.

Because it's the exact video Japan recorded. They aren't making duplicate videos just for different countries.

I'm sure Australians (or SH players) can figure out why it's summer in the video.

I live in the Northern hemisphere so picked that when I started the game.

Mt friend who also lives in the Northern hemisphere chose the Southern hemisphere, though.

We both seem to be enjoying the game equally - I can't say the updates are an issue either way.

I honestly didn’t even know about this. I chose the northern hemisphere when starting the game, but no matter which one I chose I wouldn’t have changed it anyway.

If I lived in the southern hemisphere, I would have picked the southern hemisphere. I would have been used to going "against the rest of the world" so the whole summer update thing would have been no surprise to me.

I picked Northern hemisphere because I live in the northern hemisphere, not for the "benefits."

In all honestly, I know that the updates are obviously summer-y, but most people missed diving from NL. The mermaid set was also really desired. Now they're doing more stuff with Gulliver too. I don't understand why SH people are complaining. The diving stuff is permanent. The summer update isn't temporary like the Wedding event. It's like adding Leif and Redd.

I can't stand how people complained about the lack of stuff and now are complaining when they add it's because it's too summer-y. I really don't get it.

They're getting the same content, it's not like they're not getting the diving and the NH people are. Is quarantine THAT boring or what?

i hate to break it to you but japan is literally in summer right now, ergo "summer update".

If we've gotten to the point now where people get rattled about the word ""summer" we have failed as a society. Why does an update in a video game really make people this angry? Quarantine is loosening up. Go out and have some fun for a while. (Not directed at you obviously lol)

People saying they called it the summer update because it's summer in Japan - they didn't call it the 夏のアップデート, they localised the video for the English speaking market, which includes Southern hemisphere players, so they could easily have called it something else.
I see this argument a lot when people comment about the game - they're a Japanese company, it's a Japanese game etc. but they've sold millions of copies outside Japan so I don't think it's wrong to want them to consider those consumers as well! (Even though I absolutely love Japan and Japanese culture and personally have no problem with any of the content!)

Maybe the word privilege isn't great here but the way people have reacted to complaints about this topic does seem to betray a very Northern-hemisphere-centric view of the world. In much the same way that the world map we're used to seeing shows an exaggerated Eurocentric view of the world. It's always good to be reminded that other perspectives exist!

i'm sorry but a language barrier is not comparable to them using the phrase "summer update" because the majority of the player base, including the game's origin country, is currently in that season. it's also a bad comparison because 20% of the world speaks english and almost 98% speaks anything other than japanese but only 12% of the population resides in the southern hemisphere. given that almost 18% more of the world's population speaks english than it does japanese, them translating from one language to the other makes sense. localization in general is also just common business practice in the gaming industry anyway because more languages available < more games sold < more profits, which is what a business wants. the southern hemisphere is, unfortunately, just too niche a market to be prioritized. i'm sure it sucks but it shouldn't be over this of all things.

This thread has gotten completely out of hand, and isn’t serving anyone anymore. It was supposed to be a place for people to discuss whether there was a bias or how it made them feel, but it got hijacked by a few aggressive individuals trying to stir up drama and creating a false narrative that NH players are somehow under attack.

I am leaving the discussion at this point, because it’s become draining and unproductive imo.

The latter! I didn't realise 'it' referred to playing the game in the southern hemisphere. I don't know if that sucks in general, I'm in the northern hemisphere and my game matches that.
I also don't think the southern hemisphere should be prioritised or that it would make good business sense for Nintendo to do so - that's why I don't see any disagreement.

the beginnings of this thread literally had people bashing NH players for zero reason and calling them privileged so why you're acting like it's a "false narrative" that NH players were being bashed is beyond me. regardless, there is no bias and it's been explained why over and over; the few people upset about the phrase "summer update" just don't want to hear it which is fine, each to their own, but don't act like that's automatically everyone else's problem/fault.

i don't think either hemisphere should be prioritized and they haven't been, since we're all getting the same content at the same time regardless of where in the world we live. this all seems to have spiraled from a select few taking the "summer update" label to heart for whatever reason. NL literally had region-locked holidays, with the linked items being incredibly hard to come by, even on the trading boards, and barely anyone made a fuss about that so i just don't understand why a turn of phrase is the hill people suddenly want to die on.

if it was a case of, say, nintendo releasing diving now for only the NH and then forcing the SH players to wait until summer rolls around for them (so 6 months after the fact), i'd understand the issue but that's not what's happening so i don't.
