Why do so many people have a lack of respect for their surroundings?

Nowadays, it's not a rare sight to see pavements painted with litter. In the schools, you can catch glimpses of graffiti (which often insult other people in the school), and the remains of people who haven't got the decency to clean up after themselves.

Why do people do these things when Earth is their home? Shouldn't we all take pride in the area we grow up in and form lifelong relationships?

Personally, I think people litter just because they're lazy. But yeah, humans are selfish creatures who think the earth was built for them. And only them. There's little regard for even future generations of humans.
Oh, these rainforests? We can develop this area and use this wood for houses. Who cares about the silly little animals. Oh, these huge, graceful whales? Bet we can make a lot of money if we put them in a tiny enclosure and teach them tricks.
Makes me sick.

Because some people, their parents never taught them to pick up after themselves or keep their personal spaces clean.

I agree with you. Someone in my class argued that it's alright to kill animals because "they're going to die, anyways" and that "we should be able to eat whatever we want".

We are all gonna die too. So we should respect the Earth for our children to enjoy also.

Some people just don't appreciate what they've got. Whether it be because they weren't raised right, or they choose to do so of their own accord, it's shameful and appalling. I suppose those that commit these acts just don't realize the consequences, or don't care because they don't think there is anything that's bad about it if nobody catches them. Unfortunately the number of people who lack the understanding of the importance of this world, and the things within it are one too many; however, there are a number of people just as great who do care, hopefully that number will grow as time progresses.

Maybe you need to stop seeing the world so negatively. Sure, some people suck. But some people are also amazing. Graffiti can look bad, or can be an amazing work of art. Life is worse if you just focus on the bad.

Someone must never watch or read the news.

Well a lot of places have janitors who are paid to clean up, so i can understand if ppl litter or leave a mess behind. it's the janitors job to clean up.

i'm not saying i litter, i'm just saying that's how some ppl think

Some people just think the world around them will always be the same and that everything will always "be alright" according to where the live or to their lives.

Not a lot of people seem to respect anything anymore- and I think it's partially because they're being taught to respect the wrong sort of people/things. Like- automatically throwing out the red carpet for rich people and movie stars and actors that either are genuinely respectable (which is fine) or just plain garbage. When these people are told they need to respect something, they truly don't understand what it means because they're so used to having to "respect" people in the wrong sense. Like- it doesn't mean anything anymore.

Personally, I'm not worried about Mother Nature. I do my best, but I have a feeling she'll adapt.

I want to use this as an excuse for cannibalism someday.

I feel like people don't really care about Earth or even think about it when they litter. I think they feel like it's someone else's job to pick it up and they're giving them work to do. I've had people absolutely trash a restaurant where I worked inside and outside, and they told me that I was going to have fun cleaning up after them.
I think it's more of a superiority kind of thing like "I am higher than this person. I am not required to throw this trash away, but they are."
Idk, that's just my opinion.
However, I feel that graffiti is a bit different than trash. I feel like some people use it as an artistic outlet. I don't think they're causing much of a problem unless they are writing something bad.
(Oh, and I mean graffiti on empty buildings or on trees. Somewhere that's not really inhabited. Not like schools or stores.)

People are selfish, lazy, and don't care about others or the environment.

That said, littering is nothing new. People have always done it. If anything there are less cigarette butts on the ground today than there were in the days where almost everyone smoked. And I'm sure glad I wasn't born in the era when people dumped their sewerage out into the street!

One advantage of cultures in which people tend to put great importance on respecting others, over your own convenience and desires, such as in Japan, is that things like littering and disrespecting the cleaning staff are less common. (With the suppression of individualism and high amounts of stress being drawbacks)

Americans. We have the worst, and there is garbage everywhere, we are the ones that are mostly making the Earth filthy.

I work at a department store and it truly helped me learn how disgusting people are. The crap I find inside our fitting rooms is sometimes horrific.

Also fitting rooms =/= bathrooms, in case someone lurking has ever gotten the two confused.

My store had to shut down two fitting rooms while the carpet was disinfected because someone **** in one and it...ran into the other.

While we're on the above two topics, it's amazing and appauling how much don't pick up their dogs waste. I used to walk home from school and I would litterally see that stuff every few steps...

dog owners, please pick up you dog's nasty ****, -with love, people who use(d) the sidewalk
