I can?t recall a topic like this being mentioned before, so I thought I would bring it up!

To you, what?s important in a town layout/map? Is it a lack of rocks, spaceous area for PW projects, or what?

I recently reset my town, and I have quite a few rocks, unfortunately. However my map is kind of interesting and unique, and has triangle grass which I?m super stoked about, as it?s my favorite grass (took forever to get), and I even have peaches! Love my new little town to pieces.

Rocks! I want a minimal amount. My storage town has about 7 or 8 of them, and I'm not very fond of that.

I don't like to have more than two ponds.

I don't like the private islands, either.

Everything else, I can pretty much work with.

I love ponds. They can be so fun to work with. I only have 4 in Taiga, which is a good amount but I would have wanted 6.

Interesting!

My town has about 3 ponds, but they’re spaced nicely so I don’t mind them at all!

I don’t mind rocks, but I have this nasty luck of getting one in front of my train station, in each town I’ve built, which can be a little annoying. Especially since it’s in almost the same spot in my new town, just slightly up a few squares. It’s okay though, since it isn’t dreadfully close like the others have been, so I can kinda work around it.

One big beach, not a halved beach, few ponds, few rocks in good places, a good private place for my house and a good private place for the campsite.
All initial buildings (townhall, retail, campgrounds, plaza as north as possible within good distance from each other.

I like the town to be evenly divided by the river. I don’t like little strips of land because I feel they’re hard to work with. I don’t like really choppy rivers either. Private beaches are ok. I don’t prefer them but I can make it work if it’s not too big.

I used to only want 1 pond but since I’ve come back from my break I’ve decided 2 is all right as long as they aren’t the same shape.

I only like apples, cherries or peaches as native fruit. Sorry, not sorry pears and oranges.

I don’t like having a lot of rocks, but I can deal if there’s less than 7 and the map matches the rest of my requirements.

I don't like tons of rocks or cherries as the town fruit. Other than that I don't really mind what the town has, I can usually make it work. I like retail to be near the dock usually, though with my current second town it isn't but that's because all four buildings are in a nice square which I like. Usually I want a nice private area for my house, bonus points if I can put in a nook by the river or close to one of the waterfalls.

- One or two ponds only. Clover has two ponds because I didn't realize you could even have a non-hacked town with one pond until pretty recently. Metro only has one pond.

- No pears whatsoever. They're just not a visually appealing fruit.

I don't like tons of rocks but I think that's pretty much everyone? and I really don't like the cherry town fruit.

I prefer there to be a good amount of space on the bottom half below the river to put villagers houses and all of the standard buildings like retail and town hall and stuff to be above the river, and that's probably where i'm gonna put the police station and stuff like that too. i also initially didn't like if there were private beaches so I don't have one but tbh now I kind of like them and wouldn't mind them

I don't mind the ponds at all, I actually kind of like them. My town has 3 and they're all different shapes, but if I had a bunch of ponds all the same shape it would probably definitely bug me. I also like there to be good looking places, kinda secluded, to put my house and the lighthouse. My house is right in front of a waterfall and pretty secluded and I like that

required:
has to have cherries, apples or peaches as the town fruit. the others just aren't too appealing to me.
retail has to be somewhat near the beach
a nice, private area to put my house - preferably near the beach
town hall and plaza not near the train tracks
circle glass

don't mind:
i don't really mind ponds or rocks - i can easily move around them in landscaping, and ponds are fun to work with.
it's nice to have just one beach and no private beach, but i don't mind if they're not.
plaza and town hall would preferably close to eachother

I personally like to have a curved end near the river as my house, and I made a heavily detailed campground around the campsite, which I also prefer in a bend of the river. Along with house placements, I like my houses spread way apart. So... those all come into a factor

I have three towns on three 3DSXL's, and my characters visit between them to sell perfect fruit for higher prices. So:

1) I like having Re-Tail very close to the train station
2) I like having a fruit that is different from those at my other two towns. Also,
3) The river needs to take up as little room as possible, so that I don't feel crowded. I don't like rivers with lots of twists and turns.
4) I need to be able to envision a direct path straight from the dock to the shopping area, for donating things to the museum after I have been to the island. No rocks in the way.
5) It helps if I can imagine where I'd put my house, Brewsters, the police station, the campsite, and so on.

That's about it. The fewer ponds the better, but if they aren't in the way then that is not a big deal to me. I don't care what side the beach is on or if I have a private beach. I kind of like having a long beach for fishing, though, with the dock on that part of the beach. Also I like having a train station with a roof color other than brown.

this is a pretty unpopular opinion but i really like towns with lots of lakes! mine has 3.
i also like the town hall to be in a corner, out of the way. same with the event plaza (although my current town doesn't have this and it annoys me sO badly omg)
not so many rocks because they really get in the way :c

i'm actually not a huge fan of my town's layout..........like i've made it work, i think, but i really wish i could change some of it. namely my perfect fruit (oranges, to apples or pears) and the location of my goddamn event plaza. i decided to forfeit a really good map because this one had Chief and Kyle :/

i’m also a fan of ponds. the more the merrier. my town has 3.

a river with curves for my home is a must

i like retail, town hall, villagers etc spread out over the map. having everything in a neat row is the most boring thing ever.

private beaches are nice to have but not essential

I prefer the beach on the left side, a continuous beach, and a waterfall that I can see, but it's not a deal-breaker if I like other aspects of the map. Other than that, I base layout on what I have in mind for the town. Sometimes I want one pond, sometimes six. Sometimes I want buildings all at the top of the map, other times I'd rather have them spread out. Two rocks in front of town hall can be a deal-breaker tho. I've had a couple towns where that happened, and it's a pain to work around them. (I have multiple towns and I reset a lot, so I've gotten to see many different layouts and how they've worked for my preferences)

Multiple holding ponds, a non-bifurcated beach, an interesting and twisty river and I love the yellow town hall with the brown roof.

--Two beaches (I like to use one exclusively for growing flowers 'v')
--Has to have minimal rocks
--Not too many ponds
--Round or square grass
--Cherries or apples as the town fruit (Never really liked oranges, pears, or peaches www)
--Evenly divided rivers (Although my current town has this weird stretch of land I can't put any projects in/I just put all of my fruit trees there)

--My house next to the beach/docks
--Retail right next to my house
--No-other-buildings next to the train tracks
--My campsite away from all other buildings (I put mine in a small forest-y area)

I don?t like a lot of ponds. My main town has way too many and it?s really a pain. Re-Tail has to be close to the dock. There?s gotta be peaches, cherries, or apples. I like having a private beach as well. Either side of the river has to be pretty close to even on both sides. It?s hard to work with small sections of land. I would prefer the plaza being up in a corner somewhere so I don?t have to deal with Isabelle telling me there?s no room for pwps near it. Campsite and RV have to be on the right side of the map. That?s all I can think of for now.

Primarily, I put great interest in having a lot of land mass, evenly or about evenly distributed so that there is enough room for houses and Public Works Projects and so that there isn't one bulky land mass and one small bit or a thin strip of land accompanying it. Unfortunately two of my four towns are only so-so since I wasn't as scrutinizing when I first started playing New Leaf, but it is what it is.

Not a fan of too many ponds, usually only ever want one per town. Also really dislike rocks, but because there is so much else to consider I ended up with some rocks in terrible places once I got down to building my towns up with residents and PWPs. As for the beaches, while the idea of a private or "secret" beach is neat, I always felt compelled to have both beaches in all of my towns immediately accessible via walking down the ramp.

I also went to the trouble of ensuring that all of my towns had a different town fruit and, albeit a minor thing, I don't like the brown roof on the train station so I tried to ensure three of them had the green, blue, or red roofs.

Finally, albeit only tangentially related, in an act of unintentional self-sabotage when I was creating my towns I would always strive to have at least one starting villager who I was intending to have as a permanent villager to save myself time and TBT bells in acquiring dream villagers. If I were less lazy/stubborn in that regard, my towns would probably be a bit more presentable.

The more ponds the better. Also I don't want any small strips of land that is shaped by the river, if that makes sense. I prefer it to be open.
