I would say some of the mice confuse me.
There’s Moose...who is not a moose. They gave him weird hair. There are other curly hair villagers that have nice looking curls, but Moose’s hair kind of looks like they drew it on with a crayon. And Rizzo’s bandana. Why is it tied under his nose. So weird.

Rizzo's bandana (and his whole design) may be inspired by Ebisumaru, from Konami's Goemon series (known in the west as Legend of the Mystical Ninja).

well firstly there's obviously barold, not only because he's hideous but he looks like he's straight out of an episode of south park. then there are the kangaroos which i don't hate, most of them look fine, but i just don't understand the little babies they're carrying... like is that an extra villager? do they ever speak?? i have too many questions...

I love when they do stuff like this. I didn't notice this about Penelope. It's kind of what got me interested in creating some of my own Animal Crossing villagers.

Personally, I don’t really understand the ‘superhero’ villagers - why are their outfits numbered? or why the kangaroos have babies, though part of that is just because I like to think of all my villagers as babies themselves and that kind of ruins that for me. They are confusing almost villagers and I just don’t understand the point of them (I know, there doesn’t need to be a point)

but of course, by ‘don’t understand’ I generally only am bothered when I don’t like the weird designs.

for example why is Freckles fish themed - her Japanese name is Maguro, which means tuna and her house is like a fish restaurant. What do ducks with freckles have to do with tuna fish? But I adore her weird little face, so it does not bother me

Or Stinky, who obviously is different from the superhero villagers and I don’t care that he has a weird underwear/ wrestling mask, because he is wonderful! (Also, based on some of the jock dialogue on basically basting in their own sweat, maybe his design is the only one that makes sense )

But as others have noted, the unique and varied villager designs are part of what makes me love the game, and what makes it stand out. It would be boring to make all the villagers pretty and plain, (and whose idea of pretty would you even choose?). And if they all looked like Fang, Lolly, Fauna, etc, it would make those villagers themselves also less interesting.

Plus I’m sure Rocket and company have devoted fansout there to whom their designs make perfect sense!

also i've only recently noticed this but the sanrio characters species are all off

for example:
the hello kitty one, rilla, is a gorilla instead of a cat
the my melody one, chelsea(?), is a deer instead of a bunny
and the kerokerokeroppi one is a bunny instead of a frog

i'm sure there were reasons behind this but i don't really get it tbh
i would personally prefer if they were the same species as the original character like they did with other nintendo characters like epona, inkling, wolf link etc, but they're all still cute either way (except rilla but oh well)

I will never understand why the designs of ALL the male deer (sans Bam and Erik) resemble gazelles/antelopes through the shape of their horns, rather than proper deer. That's something you'd do for one or two of the group to make them unique, not nearly all of them

I mean dont get me wrong at first i though i would not like him at all, BUT, although he is strange and truly has a strange color ( not yellow also not green )he is such a tender and such a sweet horse !!! I personally love talking to him cause he is super loving and positive a big plus is that i love this house interior !

i mean, obviously she is a mouse villager but why is there a bow where her ears are supposed to be? couldn't they give her ears and a giant bow?
that just makes her an entirely different animal because she doesn't have ears?????

this is just such a weird design and i can't get my head around what is up with it and why nintendo thought it was a good look lol

I always think that her ears are underneath the bow, she just wrapped hear ears in pink silk because she thought it would look cute - and she was right!

tbh i did actually stay on that island for like 30 mins trying to decide if i wanted her or not but i did leave her in the end since i needed a jock

i might get her in the future since i'm starting to like her design ♡

I completely agree. Something about the gorilla villagers are just unsettling to me? They kind of creep me out, maybe it’s their eyes I’m not sure.

I’m not a huge fan of the kangaroos either, the little babies sharing the mums expressions (at least I’m pretty sure they do?) creeps me out a little and I just don’t think they look super friendly!
