What do you consider when trying to choose your villagers?

I try for one of every type of villager. And I try to get villagers that I personally find to be cute!

Right now, I have: Sly, Rocket, Rocco, Ava, Cookie, Erik, Henry, and Raymond

I try to get all personalities and try not to have too much of an imbalance of gender. I do 5/5 or 6/4 one way or the other. Other than that I pick who I like.

Apart from a variety of personalities I would also consider the exterior of their houses since I have mini themes around my town with specific fences. It'll look weird if the house exterior doesn't fit the fence I use.

I consider who I like. I have 3 smugs and 2 normals rn.

I want at least one of every personality and no more than 2 of the same species.
I'm trying to not be too picky because there are a lot of villagers I haven't met yet.

Random:
I feel weird though because Genji and Flurry were some of my original 5 and I'm unsure if I want to keep them? Not because of me disliking them but I feel "ready to move on"? I've reached max friendship with Flurry and have given them both tons of gifts though so I feel invested in keeping them and don't want another player to wonder about some of the clothing choices lmao

I definitely take into account Cuteness and if they fit with my town. My town is really decorated with tons of flower patches, but it still has neat roads and stuff. I really want my villagers to have more nature-y themes, or be really cute, or both :3c

The order of things I consider, from most to least important:
1. Design (yes, I consider design over personality; if I particularly like a villager's design but they're a personality type I'm not too fond of, I might choose them anyway if their design is really that good)
2. Personality (I try to have a nice balance of personalities and no more than 2 of the same personality type unless I REALLY love the villagers because of how repetitive their dialogue can get)
3. Species (I don't usually like having more than one of the same species, but there are a few exceptions--for example, Fang and Whitney are both dreamies for me)
4. Gender (I don't really pay toooo much attention to gender, but if I noticed that I had like...9 male villagers on my island, I'd probably try to find a female for the 10th one lol. I also feel like gender indirectly factors into things because in general I like the female personality types more than the male ones, but I guess that goes back to personality rather than gender)

i just pick people who i like or who i think is cool, and then when they want to leave i let them leave and get someone new in (the top faves have to stay tho)

In this order:
- Aesthetics.
- Personality type (whether or not I have one or more in my village already and simultaniously if its a species I like or not, since you can have 10 villagers and there are 8 personality types).
- Species (not to many of the same species)

Then there is a factor of availability/affordability. I might have villagers I would like more, but if they are to expensive either in amiibo form or to get through this forum, then its pointless. Last there is the luck factor.

Thankfully there are enough appealing villagers to me.

The way they look is obvs super important. But I would say as stupid as it sounds, if I'm interested in going to see them every single day, excited when I see them out and about, going out of my way to find them, have fun dialogue exchanges with them, etc. I know that they're someone I should keep until I get their photo. I've been doing alot of swapping villagers out and trying out new villagers--I think I've finally found a balance that makes me happy. I'm still kinda wanting to try and find an uchi I like but not sure where I'd put them since I really like all of my current villagers and am not ready to swap any of them out.

i totally understand! i feel the same way about collecting their photos if they made me happy, even if i'm planning to let them move.

I definitely wanted to get 1 of each of the 8 personalities. Of the 8 types, I just went with the villagers who I really liked (Molly, Beau, Dom, Judy, Marshal, Apollo, Agnes, and Audie). It was hard to choose as I'm sure you all can understand. I more than likely will not be replacing the main 8 as I'm pretty happy with that line-up.

I won't lie, I had the hardest time deciding who the last two spots would go to. I didn't need a duplicate of another personality, but seeing as we have to have 10 villagers, it was inevitable that I would have to just go with my personal preference again and just choose villagers that I totally vibed with. So, of course, I went with Lolly (I have always wanted her, but never had her in any of the AC games) and Raymond (who I surprisingly fell in love with over time).

I like to strive for-
1One of each personality
2Duplicates can be cranky lazy uchi or snooty
But only one duplicate of a personality. If I have 2 lazy I dont need a third.
3If I had them in the past and liked them and want them (like my girl Freya or Vesta whom I need)
4If they are new because I've had every villager but the new ones.
5If I see someone cute island hopping like Drago I keep them a bit then let them go until I get someone I really want.
6If I have a villager who I can ship them with. I had Avery and ran into Celia. Welp two birds gotta get her now.

I try to my best to choose objectively. I spoiled NL by having ALL 10 dreamies in town so now I'm keeping them on the minimum with lots of room to rotate villagers. However, here are my considerations:

- Nostalgia. This is for Marshal and Maple. I'm keeping them in my island simply for the reason that I CAN'T NOT. Especially Marshal. I'm so attached to him because he was my first ever unexpected neighbor in NL who I thought I would hate because he plotted his house so close to mine. I ended up loving him and having him in every single NL town since then. He's also the only one allowed to have his house near mine in any game. I just can't play the game without him.

- Personality type. I strive for balance. I always have to have one of each in my town and no more than two of any personality. This is to keep variety and for purposes of dialogue, DIYs and reactions.

- Source. If it's coming from the NMT mystery tour, it doesn't necessarily have to be a dreamie. Just has to be someone I don't hate and someone I'd wanna get to know better. If it's coming from the campsite, it should be a dreamie, since they're most likely gonna boot someone out of my island, they better have the right to do so.

- Species. This is something I never cared for before in NL. But I found in NH, personality is very evident on the villagers in that peppies, for example, can either be super cutesy or super annoying depending on whose mouths those dialogues are coming from. I've had Audie and she's beautiful but I was bothered by the things she says as a wolf. I let her go in favor of Merry, who's by far lesser popular than Audie but I'm having so much fun with Merry this time around. The peppy personality is just so on point with the cat species (Rosie, Felicity, Tangy, Merry, etc.) and dialogue suits them better. Snooty and Cranky wolves are perfect too.

- Looks. At the risk of being called shallow, I give high priority to how villagers look. That doesn't mean they ALL have to be beautiful or cute but they gotta look their "part". A pop-star wannabe peppy must be a cutie pie. A cranky should look intimidating. A smug should have the right to be smug and look like a Casanova, not a sleazy old man. Lazies have to be ugly-cute, and not purely cute.

- House. Another thing which never bothered me before in NL. But now, I'm keeping my villagers scattered in mini themed neighborhoods and I'd love for it to look cohesive (e.g. Asian house exteriors for those who will live in my Little Asia section, cottage type woodland houses for those who will reside in the foresty part) but this is a stretch. I'm having a hard time trying to keep this up since there are so many villagers I want to experience and sometimes their houses don't exactly look the part but whatever. I'll let it go if I really like them.

My top priority is design - I go for the cuties! Having a fairly natural color palette is important to me too, for example, although I like Fuschia, I don’t really want anyone that bright. I also like having at least one of each personality to keep dialogue interesting. If personality didn’t matter I would definitely have an island mostly full of adorable normal villagers. I was trying not to have more than one of any species, but I gave in and have multiple wolves and squirrels.

honestly?

on their looks.
if i like how a villager looks he/she gets considered to be in my village ( or on my island )

the ones i'll have are:
-Becky
-Biff
-Biskit
-Chevre
-Julia
-Kevin
-Pashmina
-Savannah
-Tom
-Vic

i am thinking of switching Tom with that new cat villager with the diffrent colored eyes.
( and maybe, ONLY maybe i switch pashmina for another female animal type that i don't have yet in my town. )

I don't plan my villagers. When I go island hopping my questions are:

- how do you fit in terms of species/personality with my existing residents?
- could I see myself growing attached to you?

I usually choose at least one villager per personality (because I want to experience all personality types in AC:NH even tho I'm not very fond of some of the personality types since there are only a few villagers I actually like on those personalities (e.g. Jock and Cranky), then afterwards add extra villagers that I really like without thinking of their personality type, then afterwards will narrow them down to the villagers that would fit my town the best in terms of theme.
