What are play coins even used for?

I believe mario golf uses them to buy 1 opportunity to do over a shot in a tournament. Quite handy actually.

That sounds a lot more 'cheaty' than the other uses of play coins I know of...

I assume it's not allowed in multiplayer though, so s'all good.

It isn't, but it's not 1 play coin per shot. It's like 15 or 20.

Besides the ACNL fortune cookies, I remember in Rune Factory 4 you could trade them for in-game money, which was kinda useful. Other than that, I just spend mine on Mii Plaza stuff.
