Hello everyone! I've been playing ACNL for about a year and a half, and something happened to me today that I've never experienced.

As of last night, I had 9 villagers, one of which was moving out. Someone picked up my villager in boxes, and shortly after I went to someone else's town and adopted one of their villagers in boxes.

Come today, I started a new save file (for villager placement), but the villager had yet to place a plot. I figured this might have something to do with adopting a villager from another village the same night one of mine was in boxes, so I time traveled another day, and still no plot. This continued for another 5 days of time travel, until I decided to time travel ahead three weeks to today's date and see if my adopted villager would appear (I was behind about three weeks).

My villager has yet to appear, and much to my surprise, I still have 8 villagers. I suspect no foul play on my trading partner's end, I'm just wondering if anyone has had something similar happen to them.

Wow, that certainly is strange. That's never happened to me before.

I don't think it has anything to do with adopting a villager the same night one of your was in boxes, unless your villager in boxes is your tenth villager. It wasn't so that's definitely not the problem. I can only think of some less likely reason, but it's probably not what's causing your problem.

If it was a villager you've already had in your town and you didn't go through the 16 villager cycle, that would be why they haven't plotted yet.

If something went wrong with the trade, then that would be another problem. Then again, you didn't suspect foul play. Did you confirm that the villager accepted your offer to move into your town?

It might be that something went wrong with the trade.

What also could be, is that because a villager was moving out on the same day an new one was invited in, the game first needs to save that a villager moved out before it allows a new villager to plot. It happened to me once.
The day after my villager was in boxes and I adopted one, the next day I had no plot for my new villager. The boxed villager house was gone.
The adopted villager moved in the day after.

So it might be that the game needs to save a day and the adopted villager will move in the next.

Good luck, I hope it works out for you!

I did confirm that the villager accepted my offer. It was as routine as any other villager exchange :(

I hope that's it. He was a dreamie too. Thank you for your advice! :)

The first time you plot resetted, you may have missed the plot? If so, time travelling would have messed everything up, I guess. But other than that, I don't know.

Update!

After I got home from work today, I decided to time travel one more day to see if his plot would appear, and sure enough it did!

Strange, huh guys? :)

sometimes, villager plots can be delayed by in-game events. It's weird, and that caused my campsite villager to take nearly 9 days to put their plot down :(

I had this happen to me too. I think the game needs at least 1 day to process that the boxed up villager has moved out. (so it doesn't appear on the map) and then you can start plot resetting the next day.. First time it happened to me, I was kinda freaking out cuz I paid tbt for the villager but couldn't find his plot.. hoping it would appear the next day, I kept going forward with 3DS clock but didn't work out. then I just decided to load my mayor, save, (so my boxed up villager was gone from my map) then plot reset starting the day after.. & it worked!

Just like when you deny a villager moving request-- the game needs at least 1 day to choose another villager to move out (which let you TT forward as far as you want w/o losing a villager), I think it needs a day to process the boxed up villager before it plots the next villager you invited.

Oh, I'm glad he appeared for you! I was going to suggest that maybe there's those "surprise" villager. That is, one managed to sneak into your queue in between time of the person adopting yours and you inviting the new villager (this actually happened to me once!) But I'm glad it worked out for you. :)
