Switch Update wiping data..?

I updated last night and my data was still fine. Even played it earlier today and it was still there with no issues whatsoever.

Updated without evening knowing this was apparently a thing, my switch save files are fine. From a bit of research, the tweet in question is the only mention of this issue so far?

It means one of a few things:

1. Their update corrupted in some manner, and recovered.
2. Switch error in some fashion after the firmware update, and recovered.
3. Their Nintendo Switch was modified in some way, causing the error.
Yeah, it's most likely one of those three issues.

I wouldn't be surprised tbh as the same thing happened with Pokemon Sword/Shield (which was brought up earlier) with hacked Switch consoles (iirc, the issue was that some people had hacked their Switch to allow save data, among other things, to be read from an SD card and that kinda messed up how the game handles it or something) and even Super Smash Bros. Ultimate when the free (for a limited time) Pirahna Plant DLC was added because of fake or faulty Micro SD cards.

Hah, I remember that one. IRL friend had the issue, so I gave him my spare sandisk mSD card and it was working fine for him.

Updated yesterday. Played on my island today as I normally do. Label was even in my event plaza to do a fashion check. Which I somehow passed via complete guess work.

I updated mine without any issues. I have the first-run black Nintendo Switch from 2017 and is unmodified if you’re wondering.

Twitter is on a different universe I swear

Anyway I updated it and everything is fine so there's that

I looked at the tweet and they did say it was the AC themed switch, and I have the original, so maybe there's something different there? I don't see what would make the two different except for maybe it's newer so the bugs haven't been fixed but even then its still a switch so I'm sure they're all wired the same. I have no idea

OS wise, the newer models are the same as any other older switch. The only difference is the CPU and RAM is a better model, which wouldn't effect storage memory at all.

one more update: I think it was just his switch. Everyone is saying they're fine

In the past few hours, I did find a few other cases mentioning this issue. But what stood out to me was one of them in previous comments, they're pretty open to having a modded console.

This issue is most definitely either a one-off freak error, or an error caused due to hardware modification.

This isn't about the game data but after this update, it "wipe"s away sleep mode settings and turn it into default. So if you have set it to "Never" or longer than default and not knowing it's changed, it could result in kicking you out when you're at someone's island like when you pressed "-" button, which must be annoying to the host and other players under certain situation, such as "villager is crafting xxx! if anyone wants the DIY" situation.
