Switch Update wiping data..?

Maybe hacked saves got deleted? Mine worked fine this morning post System Update.
That's what I'm wondering. Nintendo has a history of doing stuff like that, so I wouldn't be surprised.

Otherwise it seems like it's happening to a very small percentage of people.

Updated the system and had no problems. Yet. I'm playing rn, and everything is ok atm. Hopefully it will stay like this...

Was the update for the switch or the game?
for the switch!

also updated mine this morning, my save is fine. i'm gonna guess that nintendo cracked down on the people who actually had a hacked switch? that seems to be most plausible.

Well I updated my Switch, no issues it seems!

Thank you guys for your replies! Hope the guy from the tweet can get his island back, I'd be devastated! 😭

I'm a little nervous about updating now... it seems the general feedback is that there were no issues though. I think I'll be fine, I'm just a little worried.

haven't heard of this, but i updated & nothing happened.

i feel like there's no way this would have happened? unless it's for people who hacked saves?

I just updated my Switch. The only real problem is that they still do not have Pokémon icons when you change your Switch User’s icons. But all my data, is still fine. My town still exists.

I think this is most likely the case. A lot of these issues that arise from multiple games come from people who have hacked Switches or pirated copies of games. Remember when Pokemon Sw/Sh was supposedly deleting your SDcard /Save Data? Yeah, that was on hacked systems.

i had a fairly similar issue with my new leaf cartridge. basically all updates were stored on my flimsy sd card, and my 3ds failed to recognize it, so my system offered me to update, otherwise i couldn't start the game. i did, and upon finishing it went "oh oops we actually don't have an sd card to store this on!" and kept erroring me out when i tried to start new leaf. fixed it by basically doing a factory reset on my 3ds, which was ouch, but what can you do, really. it miiight be something like this? but then again, i think the game would give them an error, still, instead of just wiping their town data.

I have yet to do the update, but that sounds like an issue that would only arise from what others have already mentioned... a hacked switch or pirated copy.
Which Nintendo has totally bricked systems before for this, so I would not be surprised if made it to erase data or saves of illegal copies or those that go against their terms of service.

I'm about to update as well, hoping everything goes smoothly😯 Just to be clear, does this update make it possible to transfer your ACNH data to another Switch? Island and all? I knew AC didn't let you before. I have the physical copy, and the data is in my internal storage I believe.

ahh yeah, it would depend on the situation. it was common on 3ds, not so much on the switch, especially if it's a digital copy. unless there's really something buggy with their system to be begin with or closed while updating? it's not even that long anyway for someone to mess it up. if they didn't hack, i'm sure they can report this to nintendo.

Mine updated yesterday. My island is, luckily, still there.

This is why they should have Cloud Saving, because you never know what might break and people are putting a lot of time into their islands.

Updated without evening knowing this was apparently a thing, my switch save files are fine. From a bit of research, the tweet in question is the only mention of this issue so far?

It means one of a few things:

1. Their update corrupted in some manner, and recovered.
2. Switch error in some fashion after the firmware update, and recovered.
3. Their Nintendo Switch was modified in some way, causing the error.

I'm leaning towards #3 being the cause after doing some further searching. I genuinely cannot find any other cases of this.
