Some questions about laying paths!

So I don't understand how it works, because I know you are allowed to have only 9 patterns stored. But what if you want to use more than 9 pattern designs on your paths? Replacing one would change everything that has been laid down...or is it impossible to have more than 9 designs (in total, not all at once)
