Sign Post Question

I see so many cute QR codes that are signs for like "caf? this way" etc, but when I scan them, I'm unable to place them on my own sign boards in my town. Am I only allowed to use designs I've created on my signs? I thought I had seen people use other QR codes on theirs, but now I'm not so sure! Any feedback would be useful, thank you!
