River Directions

Hey! I have been trying to figure out the direction of rivers' flows and I was wondering if anyone understood what determined the direction! I have been moving my waterfalls up and down to see if that changes anything, but so far I haven't been able to switch directions!

Now, my river flows from east to west but if possible, I'd prefer to have it flow the other way! Attached is my map:

I haven't got an answer for you, but I just wanted to say that this sounds like a really interesting project, and that I will watch this thread.

i think the problem is the combination of your river outlets + waterfall placements... with an east-facing river outlet like you have, any water connected to it is gonna go west -> east because it's flowing out to the sea. with your south-facing river outlet, the water's origin (left waterfall) is to the west of it, so again, west -> east.

Your river looks very similar to mine. It's how the game started for me. It's very confusing, actually. The you can look at it as two rivers, but with the one part connecting them. That part makes it weird.

So there's the left one, that flows north->south exit, and then the other, that's short and just goes from the north->east exit. I've found that the connecting part in the middle actually has 2 directions: it flows from both rivers and just sort of meets in the middle. You'd expect the whole segment to flow one way but no, it's split in half, at least on my island.

Thank you guys for the help! I'll continue to mess around with waterfall locations and see if that changes anything!!
