Hi! I have been trying lately to get all desert island escape rewards and to be honest, it's quite difficult. I decided to make this thread so we can share our strategies and see what has worked best for other people!

I found basic information in these places:

You can post your team with all of their pros and cons, as well as ask for advice!

I could definitely use some help straitening and choosing my team for desert island.
the current team i've been using is Plucky, Diana, Savannah.
Plucky goes first to sniff out the items, then Diana goes next. Since she's soft-footed I feel more confident using her on spaces plucky couldn't reach. Then Savannah, the hearty traveler, goes wherever the other 2 don't get to.
This team works pretty well for the most part, however I have been having trouble getting the high scores in normal mode.

I actually used the same combination as you for a while! I used Daisy/Isabelle, Fuchsia and Blanche, but I found that the sniff em ability was not very helpful to me. Currently, after trying a bunch of different characters, I have found that a combination of Koala, Deer and Ostrich gives me a really large movepool for a small amount of food.

Alice the Koala- Whimsy
Pros: The ability whimsy can give you 7 moves each turn, which is really good, and though the first times I used this character I was skeptical bc of the chance of getting no moves at all, I almost always get her to walk! In an intermediate map she usually gets 0 steps only once, twice at most (this rarely happens to me). Whimsies are also REALLY strong. They can easily beat up creatures without a slinghot, and they only need 1 ration per day.

Cons: Well, the probablility of wasting a whole turn is kinda scary and it can mess up your plans. I try to put her first so I can plan my strategy around her willingness to participate lol.

Fuchsia the Deer- Soft Footed
Pros: Deers have 5 moves in a turn, and they can try to escape foes before fighting them, and I've had like 4 successful sneak-away streaks with this girl, its pretty handy. Fuchsia is great for navigating beaches bc her favourite fruits are coconuts, so you can loot a great amount of fruit in each turn with her, and as koalas, deers only need one ration of food each day.

Cons: Deers have limited vision (1 square) and when they fail to sneak away from the creatures you get no escape option, you have to fight them. And deers are not very strong.

Blanche the Ostrich- Hearty Traveler

Pros: She gives you a solid 6 move turn, quite a distance compared to other animals, and she only requires a ration each day.

Cons: She's blind. You will navigate foggy areas without knowing what is around you or where are you going. Also, she has a really hard time getting out of holes.

With this team I tend to get a large food surplus and I navigate areas quicker than with other combinations!

I use Ellie, because her Fearless ability helps a lot with courses. She is able to crush rocks, and I found that she is also really good with fighting (her statistics for fighting and fleeing are the same, so I almost always let her fight) and escaping holes. I really recommend having a Fearless companion on areas with many rocks.

Sable I use for her dexterity, mostly because she can spot items and she can travel a nice distance, plus she only eats one ration a day.

For my third, I use Flo for her Swimmer ability, but only on courses that have a lot of water. I sometimes use Chief for his Loner ability, which means that he doesn't have to return to the camp at night. This is really handy for splitting up and covering more ground, but I soon found the flaw here: Loners don't use tools; so he can't fight with a slingshot, scatter bees with a net, fish, or dig up pitfalls.

Recently I've been trying Beardo. I chose him at first because I just like him, but his Honey Hunter ability is really useful! He is well rounded with fighting, he travels four spaces, and he automatically travels to spaces with a beehive, without wasting a turn. He has really good chances at getting honey as well.

I'm glad you opened this thread! I'll definitely try having a whimsy and hearty traveler on my team sometime!

At first I also tried to use villagers with lone wolf, but they are not great at fighting and they would get sick often due to that.

I like the bear cubs bc they have the Honey Hunter and they are quite strong, so over all honey hunter is my fourth favourite ability.

Wow, this is pretty helpful! I will use your set up in my next match to see how it goes :)

I have found that pairing two hearty travelers with another villager in the #1 slot with longer vision and another talent is the best best for me so far. The bottom line is being able to discover all the raft elements ASAP to get the day bonuses, so the priority to me is covering ground reliably and quickly. Three hearty travelers doesn't work b/c of their inability to see ahead and their lack of other talents. I have used Kidd, who is decent all around (better with pitfalls and bees than average, plus a healer), or one of the cats or bears for the fish/honey talent, because they will move extra spaces to get to those food resources, free of charge.

I agree; animals who can cover longer distances are the best because the biggest amount of points comes from spare days, so being able to explore large chunks of land quickly is my top priority (sadly I only have one hearty traveler at my disposal). I also heard that birds have are super op, but I don't have any to test it out.

the thing about birds is that they can only move an exact number of spaces. they can fly over water and rocks yes, but i think they only get 2 moves per turn. So I feel like they're not worth it unless you're on a map with lots of rocks or water

I currently use Isabelle (my favorite "sniff 'em out" amiibo) and 2 cats (can move 4 spaces, which is 1 space farther as a default than Isabelle, can fish without a fishing pole, and can move to adjacent fishing spots for free). It probably isn't ideal. I really would like animals that can move farther. But I just don't have too terribly many options right now. It works out OK for me, but can be hard to hit high scores at times.

tbh i don't have a specific team that i use, but i normally use Julian because he can move far, Rosie so she can catch fish for the team, and Francine because if i let her sleep she can move 7 spaces in a day :)

I would love to have my team rated! I want to create a new team that can help me get top scores.

I have Muffy, Tom and Erik as my Desert Island Escape.

Muffy has the First Aid ability. She can create medicine for the team and can also sniff out medicine. If Muffy loses a fight, she automatically uses medicine instead of losing her turn altogether. I use her mainly to help out my other teammates, as well as take her to ? spots, since she can heal herself if I run into an enemy spot and if she gets injured.

Tom has the Fisher ability. He can collect fish without a fishing rod, although he gets a 50/50 chance on whether he actually catches fish or not. I'm heavily swapping Tom out for a character with the Honey Catcher ability, though. While Fisher is alright, I feel that Honey Catcher is better since there's more of a chance I'll run into beehive trees than spots with fish in them. I use both Tom and Muffy to collect food for the team.

Erik has the Soft Footed ability. He has a 50/50 chance of sneaking pass enemies. I use Erik to not only sneak pass enemies, but also take him in one direction, since he can take 5 steps at a time. When I take him at one direction, I can discover new spots and find new places to camp for the night.

Altogether, Muffy needs 2 food, Tom need 2 food and Erik needs 1 food. I'm really fussy when it comes to how much my team eats, so I try to keep things around 5 foods for the whole team a day or less.

That's the thing: they really made it so that you have to buy amiibo cards, otherwise it is very difficult to advance. what other animals do you have available?

I like honey catcher better than fisher too! I don't really remember how good are cats against monsters, but bears can put up a fight!

It definitely pays to have at least a handful of amiibo cards handy to increase your team options. I have two horses in my town already but with the cards I have been able to have fun experimenting with different animals and their abilities. Since I really enjoy the Desert Island minigame (and the prizes you get!) it makes having the amiibo cards worth it.

I bought a bunch of cards in the beginning thinking that you could get their furniture when you scanned them, not realizing that was only the welcome amiibo cards. If I had known that I probably wouldn't have gone so crazy with the cards, ha. But anyway they're fun for this minigame.

I have mostly special character amiibo - collected mainly during the days when Happy Home Designer was bigger, as it was the only way to get them in your game. But that means I don't have any deer, ostriches, wolves, etc. I do, temporarily (he wants to move), have a deer in my town (Bam) so I could always pay some play coins to put him in the party. That might help.

Which special characters do you have? From the amiibo figures i really like tom nook, he's got the hunter ability and he's pretty tough against monsters. and Bam is a nice option :)

Honestly, you should be working on your ability to succeed when the wheel spins, regardless of activity, that is:

When shaking fruit: practice landing on the one with the most (3 or 4 for regular fruit, 7 for favorite);
When fighting baddies: practice NOT getting struck. Obviously, some animals are better than others, but I've gotten to the point that regardless of who's fighting, I don't lose;
When catching bees: landing on a spot that doesn't get you stung;
When catching fish: see "When shaking fruit."

Mastering the timing on these will pretty much eliminate the need to put characters on your team skilled in a certain area, or the need to build tools to help along the way. My team of Dobie, Buzz, and Sprocket is perfect, especially for larger maps. Even if Dobie skips over the sticks, stones, and other items, it doesn't matter, as you've become skilled enough not to need them, while discovering twice as much of a map in half the time thanks to his Lone Wolf ability.

I'd also say that getting a kill streak against baddies also helps your score significantly, as the more wins in a row you secure, the higher the points awarded at the end of each "battle."

Hope this helps.

I have an extremely hard time with the roulette, I actually close my eyes each time I spin it, I guess I really need to work on that. Thank you for the info!

Stop it when the result you don't want is at the 3 o'clock position. It works almost every time.

Triple Whimsy all the way!

Now some might argue that ya might get a whole day waste'd at times. Sure that could happen, but when ya look at the math it checks favorably to the team. Since the chance of a Whimsy to move at all is 66.6%, this means that total movement averages out at 4.666 spaces per day. So 4.666 move (above average) with 1 hunger (below average) and 3 sight(above average) is a rather nice stat spread. This doesn't factor one last important fact: ya have complete control of the roulette. This means in practice, yar actual chance of bein' able to move is way higher than 66.6%. Of course that's when ya get the timin' down, but that's honestly not a hard thin' to get down.

Besides great stats, that's not all that Whimsy offers great combative abilities as well! A centipede AND snake fight only has a 10% chance of failure without any equipment! That kinda carries over to bee fights too, although the rather high rate to ruin honey is still there. The only obstacle that might pose a trouble is pitfalls, so the only tool that's a near requirement is the shovel and that's it!

I honestly find Whimsy to be very broken given that ya have the roulette down, which again isn't hard to figure out.
