One of my dad's childhood heroes, Brian Wilson, passed away today. He loved the Beach Boys as a kid, so I imagine the news upset him a bit. For those that don't know who he was, Brian Wilson gained a bit of infamy in the late '60s for not touring with the Beach Boys for mental health reasons, and essentially wrote songs whilst isolated from the other members. It wasn't until numerous documentaries and the release of 2004's
Smile album did people truly understand the personal struggles he had to endure in order to save himself from the insanity of those who told him to "go commercial" or face failure. I instantly thought of this song when I heard about his passing:
Despite this song being primarily composed by his brother Carl in 1971 and going unreleased until several decades later, it still sounds very powerful compared to the surf pop of their earlier, more popular years. These lyrics sort of reflect the emotions hidden inside everyone:
Tell me who ever said a man can't cry?
I know I can cry
And we'll live our life alone
And I know it's alright
It's alright
Men really can cry. Heck, I teared up in my boss' office this morning when I finally started to feel remorse for the poor actions I've been performing in front of everyone at work lately. And yes, being lonely at my house can be a pain at times, but at least I'm lucky enough to have a roof over my head, eat what I want, and do some of the things I love to keep me happy.
He will be missed.
