If you look past the fact that this is one of the hardest Mario games ever (probably the hardest?) this always sounded like the sweetest lullaby 

To be fair, Animal Crossing do have some canon implications for the characters but it is mostly applied to NPC's like Tom Nook or the Able Sisters (the backstory dialogue presented in Wild World). For the most part, I felt like Nintendo intentionally left everything else open to interpretation while leaving some canon characterization hints for regular villagers. Henceforth, nothing is canon so that the families (their target audience for Animal Crossing games) could use a bit of imagination when crafting their gameplay experience.I sometimes imagine that Nintendo reads a lot of Animal Crossing fan stories and their reaction is simply this:
