Pirating

I will only pirate things like films if I didn't get to see it in the cinema and it's been out for a while now, AND also if it's the first time I'm watching it. Generally, I like to buy DVDs, if it's a film I really like. I like to support things that I like after all. Same with videogames, I'll buy them if it's to support a company I like (especially in the case of indie games), but if it's a really old game, I'd just emulate it. I don't really listen to music though so I can't really say for that, but usually I just end up downloading those for free. I'm not a big fan of any band or artist...

I do it all the time depending on what I'm pirating.
Like I'll download music for free but then I'll usually end up buying tons of merchandise from the same artist,
so in my mind it all balances out lol

I dont really think thats counts because key word you used there is "bought" and pirating is when you don't pay for stuff so you're good

I find that way of thinking very interesting because it's a really common thing I hear in regards to what is and isn't okay. Less about the specific Mother 3 fan translation (because that's both a mod and a game unreleased outside of Japan, which we all sort of agree is okay) but the general "as long as you paid for it, it's okay" attitude seems weird.

The main thing people don't like about Piracy is that the original creator(s) receive nothing from it. So, what about second hand purchases where the creator still doesn't receive anything from it? How is one better than the other when the general reason people don't like piracy applies to both?

Aside from the format, what really is the difference between me illegally downloading a free ROM of Star Fox 64 and paying somebody who isn't Nintendo ?20 for a second hand copy?

I have no issue buying preowned so I don't really care about the morality of it, I just find it all a bit strange that as long as money has been exchanged everything is fine, which is a generally really 'popular' view on the subject.

I think it's natural. I can't really decide on whether it's moral or not, but I think it's natural. The temptation is there. It's practically encouraged nowadays. I don't find it shocking at all.

I do it all the time. If the torrent options suck in quality or outdated, ill probably cave in and buy it.
I usually torrent PC games, programs (word, video editing, small plug ins for mac, music)
i dont bother downloading movies. id rather watch it pre uploaded on some illegal site.

That's a really good point. You can get 3 CDs for ?1 at a car boot sale, or pirate 3 CDs for free; both times the artist gets nothing, but only one is illegal.
