Found this on social media. while it does look pretty, it is a 100% hacked item.

I thought that Hacking would be harder to come across after the patch a week or so ago, when they fixed the duping glitch(thank god). but apparently, people are now PUTTING STAR FRAGMENTS in trees. these items cannot be obtained legitimately, they are Hacked.
any opinions?

Its been a couple weeks since those came around.

There were rumors of corrupting saves and dead spots if you shook them, but I didn't see anything concrete.

Oh boy. This was a hot topic a couple of weeks ago. People were saying they could corrupt your save and cause dead spots, but apparently that was bad info. Maybe Ninty will be inspired to really create these.

Be aware that is not the only things being put in trees. Abdallah posted a video on youtube(he didn't say how to do it fyi). He had trees with flowers, beach bottles, furniture and even other trees. And someone sent him other hacked trees that he was told to open on a mystery island that had fish, bugs and robots to name a few(had to open them om mystery island because when u shake them the items cant be picked up). If someone is selling trees with anything that isn't normally in them think before you buy, it's not worth corrupting your game.

They look awesome and I would definitely have them around if there was a way to get these legitimately.

And yeah, people have probably rumoured this to cause save corruption. If you ask me, this is exactly like people claiming that talking to Leif with wrapped presents in your inventory will cause your game to corrupt. Or like people claiming that having a visitor leaving via the minus button to corrupt a save.

People just really like to tell others that their save file is in danger, I guess. Either because they get a kick out of it (for being the one to 'report' the danger?) or because they are trying to influence other players (because the minus button and star trees are the devil's mechanics!)...

Here's how it goes: the game has a spot where it has saved a fruit tree. That tree has a property, telling the game "This <Tree> has <apple>". Not exactly like that but in whatever language the Switch speaks, but that's still how it knows what to put up there! It's important, because we also have pear trees and bell trees and you get the point.

Change the field of apple to star with magic, and wow. The <Tree> has <star>. As far as the game is concerned, the tree now has stars. Nothing changed in the process of how the game saves this tree, or how it loads it, only what it puts up there. It's unintended, for sure. But if it saved/loaded successfully once, it's probably fine! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

they’re pretty and would look great in my celestial campsite if they were able to be obtained legitimately. i visited someone’s island a few weeks ago who had some of these bad boys around and it kinda made me nervous lmao

It’s nice, but I don’t want them in my island because of the risks.

I wouldn't say people do it to get a kick out of it; I think the difference is that the trees are genuinely not legit and anything that isn't legit is bound to have some consequences (except duping). Obviously talking to Leif with wrapped gifts is not absurd by any means, so yeah THAT is trying to get a kick out of people.

Let's not discredit those who could very well be telling the truth about what could be a game-breaking issue. Whether the dead spots from whatever comes from these trees actually happen or not, I personally rather stick to what is legitimate, even if the chance of file corruption is super slim. Always better safe than sorry, in my opinion :)

i personally don't care if people hack as long as they aren't using hacks to harm anyone else. those trees look awesome and i'd love to have them on my own island, but alas i can only admire them from other people's islands :( i'll never hack my system. they're clearly doing it for the aesthetic.

i can't imagine that shaking those trees will cause anything harmful.... like.. the game probably reads them as some unknown fruit if not regular fruit, idk. i feel like at most star frags would just fall to the ground, most likely not grow back. then again considering how many glitches this game has had so far, it's hard to say.

I should perhaps have been more specific, the "getting a kick out of it" was referring to the Leif nonsense specifically. :)

And I am not discrediting people who say that their game got broken, I am only saying that at least half of the 'glitches' I see reported are either people posting their correlation as fact (observations like "Someone disconnected with minus yesterday and today my save was messed up" and "I time-travelled and haven't seen Flick in two weeks" do not mean the two are connected in any way!) and as someone who does know a little bit about code, it just really grinds my gears and it is probably the easiest way to get me to rant-

-oh boy there I went again. :D

I do respect the better-safe-than-sorry method though! There are hundreds of ways to program a single function and this means that no code is ever flawless. And yeah, messing with your save file is usually a bad idea!

Ahhhh okay, that makes more sense! Thanks for clarifying and I agree! People tend to definitely blow things out of proportion, and I could definitely see how people might just try to worry the community about something where there shouldn't be worry.

I know I’m in the minority here but I think these hacked trees look bad. Like, cheap and plasticky, which is kinda wild since NH has such improved textures overall. Also, the idea of star fragments growing on trees...ehhh, it’s a bit naff. Just saying, even if they’re totally harmless to your save, ask yourself: do you want them because you actually like them or do you want them because they’re “rare” ( well, as rare as code can be)? And is it worth it? I vote nah.

I agree! I know it's pretty, but while this game revolves around talking animals and isn't realistic, I still think the star frag trees just look off. Like... can they at least glow? Sparkle? Just a plain tree with stars. Ain't THAT special lol.

For the record, a patch cannot fix hacking. The hacking is done through save editing, and there is no possible patch to stop one from doing that. They would pretty much have to remove the system from the people who can hack to stop hacks from happening!

I have a launch day switch on which I have my second island where I can hack if I felt like it. I've tested out some things out of curiosity and to confirm suspicions or show things to people, but I haven't ever used my second island to hack items or anything to give or sell to people. It's basically loading up a new program on my switch, downloading my save data, uploading it onto my laptop, using another program to edit it, putting it back onto my switch and then uploading it overtop the original data.

That said, I would love tree decorations. An ability to make glowy trees would be so nice, and not just the barely visible lights on the pine trees in winter.

Those are not real?

According to Google news. They said it was a real thing.

Thanks for posting this thread before hand

For a second when I saw the post title I thought it was a decoration tactic :P but wow, I hope they aren't just going to start selling the fragments to make a profit

Abdullahsmash posted a great video about them like someone else said, I do urge someone considering them to watch it 😭 You can see him shaking the trees on a NM island and after seeing the result, it only encouraged my opinion that I don’t want them on my island :c

I havent seen the video myself, but i know star fragment trees look really cute!! what happens when you shake the trees though?

Nintendo can't really do anything about save editing, which is what this is, like Centuria explained. I wouldn't really consider it 'hacking', since all it involves is opening your animal crossing save file on your pc and uploading it to a program that lets you move objects in your town. It's fun tbh once you've done everything there is to be done in the game. I did it in NL and it was literally so simple to do. It's how people put public works projects and trees wherever they wanted without limitation.

I think the star fragments on trees is kinda cute but I wouldn't want them on ALL my trees. Maybe in just one area of my island if I was going for a mystical vibe.
