Opinion on seasonal holidays coming out in patches?

With the prevalence of roadmaps and having seen where that's gone elsewhere in the gaming industry, to say I'm not a fan would be an understatement.

If Nintendo went under right now and another patch was never released, I'd be incredibly unhappy with the $60 purchase lol.

I was going to disagree at first, as I don't like being forced to play the same experience as others, but I actually think I agree with what you said. To me, it would be a 'fair' compromise to keep the first year's events 'secret' as to surprise everyone and avoid spoilers, and then release the holidays permanently afterwards for people to enjoy at their own pace.

I am actually interested to see if they will modify / change holidays yearly! Such as addressing people's complaints, such as eggs overlapping the cherry blossom recipes....
You don't know what will happen next year or when they will decide to end the support to NH so it's useless to worry about that now. In Italian we say "don't bandage your head before breaking it".

I don't mind holidays coming out in patches...

BUT

I absolutely hate that I have to sync my Switch's time up to get the holiday. I like time traveling, I don't have the luxury of being able to play all the time and sometimes you just run out of things to do. Forcing players to travel back to the real world time is completely unnecessary.

If it were just for the first year I'd be fine with it, but since you can't do Bunny Day in 2021, who knows how they'll handle it? I'm hoping they're just using the first year to work everything out, and then they'll add in a patch once a year has passed to make events permanent.

I don't like the idea of events changing every year either, if that's what they're going for, but as long as they stay in the game permanently after they're added, I guess it wouldn't be the worst. If they do remove events after they've passed though, I'd have a much bigger issue. But since we don't know what exactly they're plans are yet, it's hard to give an accurate opinion.

I think that's more so your own views on the matter, which I can respect. But personally, with how much I paid for this game, I think it's fine and not 'useless' to address valid concerns for the future, especially when you take a look at other games in the past that have been affected by use of online / patch based services.

Unless you want the game to be like new leaf where nothing new was added for 3-4 years then I'm fine with the patches and seasonal updates. I don't like things being spoiled and I like to constantly have new features/items added to the game to work towards. In addition, Nintendo will not abandon this game for a long time, since it was worked on for 8 years and that it is one of the most popular video games right now. Also, Nintendo continues to update the game even will the covid-19 pandemic at hand.

I don't time travel so this has 0 effect on me and I agree that I like not having to worry about spoilers and knowing the community's going through all these events equally blind

But imo the most overlooked part here is how unfair this is to people who don't have consistent internet access. I used to work at a gamestop where most of the customers were tourists and most people didn't have internet access at home, or at the very least not consistently enough to connect their consoles online. All we have to do is wait for updates to come to us, but a lot of kids are probably gonna be getting this game as a gift and will never be able to update for the events.

These are my hopes as well! Since the updates may be due to a rushed release, I hope they take this year to sort it all out, but let us have the holidays permanently afterwards so we can play when and how we want. I'm also against the idea of them changing holidays up each year, but I would like to see them use the ability to patch to address common complaints, such as egg recipes over lapping the cherry blossom event was a big one.

I agree that there's potential for concerns, but Nintendo decided to do this before this pandemic was even a thing. You can't predict stuff like this. I'm sure Nintendo will do their best to keep supporting this game. I don't know the sales figures, but it sounds like NH is selling well.

I personally don't have too many issues with it right now. I thought I wouldn't like it, but it's kinda nice to have aspects of the game that everyone gets to learn about at the same time, even if they don't TT. It's kinda exciting too, wondering what is planned to be added in.

i'm fine with it personally. i like that new content and patches will add new things to the game for the foreseeable future and i like that i don't have things spoiled for me. i feel like everyone's already said what i would've said about it in a more articulate matter in here and other threads like this, so i'll just leave it at that!

i actually really like the idea of this because it means that our holidays and festivals might be different each year. otherwise it would feel a little boring with the idea of "you've experienced bunny day once and it's going to be the exact same thing next year". I think the events were like that in new leaf so I find this a positive step forward if that's the way they are going to take these things

I haven't decided yet. It is interesting and unprecedented for AC. This is the real first game to do regular updates. I think people are forgetting or don't know that Welcome Amiibo in NL caught everyone off guard and I don't think anyone was expecting an update to the game.

I want to wait at least three months before deciding if I like it or not.

I (personally) would appreciate these updates. They would give a new experience every year, and I'd probably find it boring if we just went through the same events every year, because we'd already had the items, and know how everything went. Obviously, we haven't seen how these events are gonna work yet, so my opinion could change, but for now I really like the idea! It's different, but i think it's going to help keep the game alive in the years to come.

In theory I like events coming out in patches, but only in theory. Nowadays most people have some way to connect their Switch to the internet for updates but I still live in a pretty rural part of the country where in some places it's still nearly impossible to get any kind of reliable internet access and I'd feel robbed if I bought this game for $60 and had no way to get patches. My personal concern is what happens with events when support for New Horizons ends; I just can't make myself be as optimistic as other people about how Nintendo will handle events after that. As someone who is still still regularly playing GC, WW, CF, and NL in addition to NH I worry how events are gonna work 10 years from now.

It's a breath of fresh air not having the events and holiday furniture being spoiled during the first week. All I gotta say.

This is kind of like a hit or miss point I feel. The stuff getting added into the game (as far as we're currently aware) was in New Leaf from day one - so yeah it feels nice that it's being updated and we're having a stream of content patched into the game, but we're only really getting content we've had before in previous games (again - as far as we're currently aware).

This is really the only benefit I've seen of it so far and a fair one at that, though personally that sort of thing didn't bother me much in the first place (it's kind of predictable what we'll get anyway I think - just variations of normal furniture items and fences, it's only really the way we go about getting them that's interesting).

I find time locked events to be stressful as all heck. I just couldn't play during cherry blossom and bunny day season, it was so stressful. Oh well, it is what it is.

I've never time traveled for certain events, but if say like I got sick the entire week of xmas and couldnt even pick up my switch for more than a few minutes that would really suck...

But then as I'm typing this, giving it more thought, it's kind of nice how its synced with our real calenders!

Thank you!! I always wanted to participate but I was too shy to share my opinions (reddit AC communities censor a lot)

Are access to upgrade criteria, such as Nooks, directly tied to patch releases? Oh my gosh I hope not

but agreed, I'm still mulling it over but it's unfortunately leaning towards unfair / unright as of now...
I’m not positive, but as of right now it seems they will be. TTers haven’t been able to get past the first upgrade/second iteration of Nook’s, but the datamine revealed that there are more upgrades past that one.

I am fine with new things being added to the game in updates. esp if you bought the game late, you still get all the updates when you load the game up the first time (assuming it is supported of course) however, I don't like the idea of them taking things away, which I hope they don't do.
