I use both

Mechanical for drawing/sketching
Regular for writing

I write a lot more than I draw though so I voted regular

Mech-pencils. I hate pencil shavings and I find my hand-writing is much better when using a mech-pencil.

Mechanical pencils will always win. They save trees, and the only time I've ever really had to use normal pencils was for standardized tests :(

Mechanical. Regular ones strain my hands, but mechanicals have grips most of the time.

It depends on what I'm doing. If I am writing in a notebook or on paper for homework, I prefer a regular pencil, because the eraser is better and the lines are softer and erase better.

If I am doing a lazy sketch I prefer a .7 mil leaded mechanical pencil and a good kneadable eraser. the fine lines of a mechanical pencil help with sketching and the lead in a mechanical pencil doesn't smudge as easily.

If I am doing shading I prefer a 4B or 5B pencil because of the dark shades it can let off and yet still be soft when needed. I also love to use a blending tool because these pencils smear easily, the lead is very soft.

If I'm doing a rough sketch I use an H pencil. It rarely smears and has a very smooth and light line that easily blends in when I hard line after I scan it. Or if I don't wanna do digital arts I'll probably is a mechanical Pencil so I can erase when I'm done inking because honestly the H pencil never erases well IMO.

I guess the winner for my is normal Pencil. But I still love mechanical pencils for sketching.

Sorry for this, but "they save trees" isn't a really good argument. Mechanical pencils are made from plastic and while they're not thrown away as much, they do more damage to the environment than regular pencils. Sure, some trees are saved but we can regrow those. What we can't regrow is petroleum, nor can we easily get rid of all the chemical waste that goes into producing plastic. Using mechanical pencils might save a couple of trees now (spoilers: it doesn't, since regular pencils are still made anyway), but if you look at the long-lasting effects mechanical pencils are much worse for the planet than regular.

So it's a **** argument.

I voted mechanical, but I wish you had pen listed on the poll. I'm left handed so pencils always smudge. I take math notes in pen too.

Regular. Since I have a heck of a time with mechanical ones for some reason -_-. I've gotten better using them over the years, but I'm still not a huge fan of them.

Definitely mechanical. They're cuter, more comfortable to hold, and reusable. And much quicker to fix if your lead breaks. Its so annoying to sharpen a pencil. It either come out uneven, and takes forever or disrupts class.
