I'm really disappointed in the behaviour of some of the fandom.

I'm sick of seeing people being belittled on Twitter because they choose to play the game a certain way. I'm not a time-travelling person, nor would I ever want to time-travel because I personally do think it goes against what the game is about. But that doesn't mean, like some people are doing, that you have to put down someone's work because you suspect they have done some time-travelling.

I'm annoyed at how the community has to go out of the way to say "aren't we wholesome" all the time... and then buy/trade villagers for real money on eBay, or try and rip other players off all the time with extortionate prices. Really? Oh - and then there's people who are jumping on other fanbases now, commenting on the upcoming Xenoblade release saying 'I won't buy this, I'm playing Animal Crossing instead. It's so much better.' Grow up. We've got our game, let people look forward to the games they have coming up. And then there are people for some bizarre reason going over to jump on The Last of Us 2 and saying 'Animal Crossing is better because no crunch!! How dare you enjoy a game that isn't Animal Crossing.' (Slight exaggeration, but that's the kind of attititude people are taking.) And you see it all the time.

Oh, and here's what annoys me - people are trying to romantize every animal in the game. I don't think C.J. and Flick are in a relationship, for example. Yet if you have that opinion apparently you're 'ruining people's fun.' They're not real people. They're animals. Who cares?

This is a minority of people, overall. That has to be stressed. But it's the same people, and it really gives the franchise a bad look. We've got our game, we waited a long time for it, it's smashing sales records because it's amazing, and it was made with 100% dedication and passion by the developers at Nintendo. Aya Kyogoku and Nogami did an awesome job. So please. Stop arguing over pointless things. Stop belittling other fandoms. Let them enjoy their games. Not everyone has to like Animal Crossing. It doesn't mean you have to ruin their fun. And please, stop selling animals on eBay for $50 each. It's absolutely asinine.

The loudest people in a fandom are often also the most obnoxious ones. Everyone plays this game differently and gets different things out of it. This kind of diversity should be celebrated, not belittled. But hey, this is fandom nowadays, no matter what franchise. Sadly.

i personally don’t care what others do. want to time travel? go for it. want to ship two animals/npcs together? knock yourself out. none of it affects me at all and so i don’t see any reason to be bothered by it lol

theyre literally headcanons, im sure most people know that CJ and Flick aren’t actually in a relationship but its fun to imagine. as long as people aren’t trying to push it on you and you’re not trying to police people’s headcanons why does it matter?

all fandoms are toxic in their own way. I would say AC is a little less toxic than others that I’ve been in tbh

I think a lot of it is how popular the game is right now. It's bringing in so many people that it's inevitable. I think it'll get better over time.

What OP said is that people are pushing it on them.

my bad i missed that part. it’s okay to think that characters aren’t in relationships, but i got the impression that OP was mad that people even had these headcanons in the first place. please correct me if im wrong tho OP

Always hate the fact some of the AC Fandom tries to make New Horizons a very competitive game of "Who has the nicest island" and mock islands that aren't up to par compared to theirs, at least that's the Twitter experience, also any influence by these islands have caused toxic callouts as people *stealing* their work.

Also not a big fan of the whole CJ & Flick situation, I really don't care if they were canonically in a relationship. It just peeves me when people who aren't on the bandwagon are being forced "NO THEY'RE GAY AND THAT'S TRUE BECAUSE I SAID IT IS!!"

As a gay person, I really don't approve how a majority of people have tried to push their own headcanon of them both onto the rest of people.

I have the same opinion that as long as people are doing their own thing it's all good. Just don't make other people try to follow it.

I know there are exceptions to every rule, but - I feel like a lot of the people who have these intense reactions and opinion are typically < 24 years of age, more often in their teens, maybe....early 20's. maybe. I watch the way they speak and write on the various discords and forums and it's appalling.

That said, I think that as a community we also have to understand that a majority of the active fandom on these websites and discords, are mostly youth. And perhaps it's my "old" age, but I roll my eyes at youth both online and IRL - and in fact, it is something that only comes with age. It's like this IRL too - do you ever look back at yourself in your youth, and think "Damn, I really shouldn't have stressed that much about this, because it didn't really matter." But it's something you can't explain to someone - they just have to experience.

My entire group of IRL friends are playing Animal Crossing, but we're all 28-33. We have our own discord, and it's super pleasant. And even in quarantine, we still have things to take care of, children to feed and businesses to run - things that take more effort and energy than worrying if someone changes the time on their Switch.

Ultimately, though I appreciate that all fandoms, hobbies, and interests build communities, we also have to be cognizant of what that community consists of. I highly doubt the same type of demographic is in, say, a Danielle Steele bookclub. We must realize that AC is mainly youth, and just because we play with them, they are not anyone in the community's responsibility to reprimand or babysit.

Twitter as a whole is just a cancer fest, I don't understand why ya'll even use it, I can't be on there for longer than 3 minutes before I see some insane **** that makes my blood boil, and I'm not an angry person at all, just something about people on twitter, it's the worst trash I've ever laid eyes on, and it's just constantly pouring 24/7, echo chamber after echo chamber of insanity.

I know my sister told me she found some nsfw animal crossing fanart on twitter which she found disturbing but it's bound to happen.... rule of the internet and everything.

 I don't really like the 'obsessive' sexualizing and shipping of Animal Crossing. It feels weird to me, the need for every character to be crushing on another, Not all relationships are romanticially leaning. That said, I don't mind people pairing them up, just not the weird obsessive way some are.

I also don't really care about time-travelling, each to their own and it's a game that can be played in many different ways. Some people do seem a bit hardcore on animal crossing and selling villagers for real money is crazy!

Definitely don't make a Twitter account for Animal Crossing related stuff, it's definitely where the most toxic side of the AC fandom is.
I've always used Twitter for looking at memes n' junk and to converse with friends who're not in my Discord server, the AC fandom over on Twitter before ACNH released sure was dark times.

I think every fandom has its own toxic group of people and often those tend to be the loudest (because the rest are actually enjoying the game, lmao). I absolutely don't care about headcanons and I personally dig Flick and CJ but if you don't, that's fine, too. I actually enjoy the headcanon because most LGBT characters in video games (specially those from japanese companies) are either absent or mocked.

Like people have said, the weird toxic groups in fandoms are always the loudest and don't represent the majority. Once you realise this it's easy to just have a laugh, take a step back and not let it bother you.

Imo I left Twitter for a while now because of how awful it can be. I don’t like using the word “toxic” due to how it’s thrown around a lot but Twitter really is the textbook definition of toxic, not to mention the amount of performative activism going around there. If you’re going to get Twitter, enjoy staring at 50+ kpop fancams, as the kpop fandom on twitter is absolutely the worst and the reason why I stopped listening to it.

I feel like Instagram is a much better alternative as I made lots of mutuals there. It’s much quieter on there imo.

ac twitter is actually insane. they are #GREEDY GUTS! other than the toxicity they scramble and sometimes use bots to find turnip prices or villagers that they want. if u want to innocently tweet about ur turnip prices good luck dealing with 80+ entitled people blowing up ur inbox

i have no problem with people making headcanons for lgbt+ relationships its harmless its fun but what bothers me is when it becomes fetishization, raymond has specifically been a target of this
