I'm really disappointed in the behaviour of some of the fandom.

This comment was not productive. It happens here too. Maybe not as common as somewhere like Twitter, but the point is valid. The OP brings up relevant points.
I understand your point and agree that in certain levels it does apply here too. But what I personally find frustrating is behaving like the community here is anywhere near Twitter level.

People can be rude regardless of what game they're part of its community. I don't think it's fair to blame Animal Crossing just because it has a multiplayer economy. People are allowed to have their opinions. It's more important to not create a harshly critical atmoshpere, that also includes the "right opinion".

But let's not pretend it's the same situation for queer pairings. The only couple are Cyrus and Reese, but we also know that game aren't allowed to be explicit about the existence of queerness if they want to keep the appropiate rating and availability for their game or media in general. More often than not the little dialogue hints are put in on purpose, because the other option isn't allowed. Just like back then the western localisation made Saharah a woman because god forbid a man uses fake eyelashes, eh? Context matters for these situations, that also includes the climate of our social acceptance. We had to fight for queer couples in the Mii games as well, it's good to be vocal about this topic because it helps us.

I'm not blaming Animal Crossing at all. You might want to read the concluding paragraph of my post. The developers have made an outstanding game. A small proportion of the community is what me and a lot of other people are blaming. Also, in regards to relationships, has it not occured to you that most people don't actually care about the animals having relationships in this game? It doesn't add anything nor take anything away from the game whatsoever. If the guidebook had said C.J and Flick are in a relationship, that would have been fine. I still wouldn't care about it. It just doesn't matter.

Well, it's in your title, it's a fandom, what did you expect. You can get mad at them and rant and they would just post a kpop fancam.

I can absolutely agree that TBT is a wonderful community compared to most other AC communities, if not all. I just didn’t agree with the sentiment that OP shouldn’t post their rant here. I saw this post as an outlet that the overall good people here at TBT could empathize with. Sometimes it’s just nice to remember how lucky we all are to have found this forum, and band together against the small, toxic minority. I think it is a worthy discussion of the fandom no matter the forum.

I've been involved in twitter, reddit and discord and the TBT fandom is SO MUCH BETTER.
I don't think OP was directly complaining about TBT and i think this would be the best place to put a rant like this anyway, since most of us would agree

I agree. I don’t understand any post that claims this isn’t the place to post a rant about another community. The truth is, it is relevant for any AC community no matter how great it is overall.

You're correct. This forum, along with another forum which I use (I won't name it, but I'm sure you know which it is - there's only really two major Animal Crossing forums), I would say 95% of people on here are genuinely really nice. I have never had a problem online with someone, and people go out of their way to help you on here, and engage in discussions. I have people that I've only spoken to a few times here posting birthday messages on my wall - you rarely see that anywhere else on the internet. I just wish it would extend to other parts of the Animal Crossing community. :)

Agreed. Someone went feral on Twitter about time travelling, while few others equated TTers like committing war crimes and something political (that I really don't want to talk about further bc ugh lol). I really want to forget about it lmao. It's just people being verbally abusive over a SUBJECTIVE playstyle is so...rude? You don't have to sing praises to TTing or have to say TTing good! Just. Don't. Be. VERBALLY. ABUSIVE. TO. OTHER. PLAYERS. I TT to speed up my bridges and inclines and to cycle villagers. I gain nothing but minor convenience. It's so tiring being slammed over it. I'm sorry, I guess? I'm still dirt poor and don't magically whip up items like CFW switch users or dupers but go off?

People need to learn to mind their own business over a game that lets you talk to cartoon animals.

For the second point though, I don't think it's a bad thing. It's just headcanons and people are just accepting it because it's nice. What I'm uncomfortable is Tom Nook and Redd being "lovers" because Redd literally conned Tom Nook and made him callous and indifferent in the first game. To the point Sable cried about it (by confiding to you eventually).

I would NEVER want Tom Nook near Redd at all. I'd rather let Tom be shipped with Blathers. Let Tom rest and move on from that dark moment of his life lol.

honestly ive never heard of another AC forum, mainly because ive never gone out and looked lol
But ive only ever had positive experiences here! I've had weird and frustrating ones, like people bidding on auctions and then not being able to pay, but overall ive never had anything super negative and upsetting happen

Okay, thanks for your responses everyone. I'm glad to see the majority of you do see the problem here - not that many people on the forum are involved themselves, just a very small minority.

I guess to sum up, play how you want. I don't like time-travelling, I would never time-travel, I do think it goes against the game (personally) but I wouldn't judge someone for playing the way they want to (as long as you're not spoiling major things just to show off, obviously - there are some people who do that.) There's no need to write any nasty comments on YouTube or make someone feel bad on Twitter in any way because they decide to play the game a certain way - in no way does it affect you.

As for the headcanons - same point, really. Think what you will, imagine what you want. But don't force people into having the same thinking as you, and accusing them of things if they don't. It's nasty, and brings out the most toxic part of the fanbase. It's cool if you choose to see two characters in a relationship, whichever way (gay/straight), however else. I just don't care, and a lot of other people don't care - we just want to play the game without having things thrown in out faces for not agreeing with you about a certain point.

Just please, all be nice to eachother (I know the vast majority of us in the forum are awesome, really) - this is mainly a rant to the toxic side of the Twitter community, and also I think you see it a lot on the r/AC_NewHorizons subreddit, as well. Let's just all enjoy the game, have fun, appreciate the amazing hard work of the developers at Nintendo that clearly put their heart and soul into making the game (obviously, critique where there are short-comings too, haha - just don't be nasty in the way you criticise. There is constructive criticism.)

I think (and I hope) that after a few months, and the community has settled, and people have stopped obsessing over getting certain villagers no matter the cost (god forbid...), things will get better, and we hopefully won't have to complain.

Sorry for the long post. I just really needed to rant, because it did genuinely upset me the way that other communities were looking at us in a negative light (quite rightly) because of the way a small percentage of people have been behaving in the community. So let's calm down, and all enjoy this awesome game. :)

(I would appreciate the thread being locked now, I think all that has been said that is needed! :) )

Really? So you don't think there's anything at all worth discussing here?
No, not really, at least nothing that hasn't already been exhausted prior to this post. The Tl;dr version of all of them is: there are bad people in this world, do your best to avoid them.

I agree! I do think its funny when ppl headcanon Tom Nook and Redd as Exes tho!! But Blathers and Tom Nook is just perfect :D

Has it occured to you that you don't speak for most people? It wouldn't be a topic if a lot of people didn't talk about it. No need to dismiss the topic entirely. And honestly you're much more aggressive than people saying they dislike time traveling, discussions need respect as well.

I'm sick of seeing people being belittled on Twitter because they choose to play the game a certain way. I'm not a time-travelling person, nor would I ever want to time-travel because I personally do think it goes against what the game is about. But that doesn't mean, like some people are doing, that you have to put down someone's work because you suspect they have done some time-travelling.

I'm annoyed at how the community has to go out of the way to say "aren't we wholesome" all the time... and then buy/trade villagers for real money on eBay, or try and rip other players off all the time with extortionate prices. Really? Oh - and then there's people who are jumping on other fanbases now, commenting on the upcoming Xenoblade release saying 'I won't buy this, I'm playing Animal Crossing instead. It's so much better.' Grow up. We've got our game, let people look forward to the games they have coming up. And then there are people for some bizarre reason going over to jump on The Last of Us 2 and saying 'Animal Crossing is better because no crunch!! How dare you enjoy a game that isn't Animal Crossing.' (Slight exaggeration, but that's the kind of attititude people are taking.) And you see it all the time.

Oh, and here's what annoys me - people are trying to romantize every animal in the game. I don't think C.J. and Flick are in a relationship, for example. Yet if you have that opinion apparently you're 'ruining people's fun.' They're not real people. They're animals. Who cares?

This is a minority of people, overall. That has to be stressed. But it's the same people, and it really gives the franchise a bad look. We've got our game, we waited a long time for it, it's smashing sales records because it's amazing, and it was made with 100% dedication and passion by the developers at Nintendo. Aya Kyogoku and Nogami did an awesome job. So please. Stop arguing over pointless things. Stop belittling other fandoms. Let them enjoy their games. Not everyone has to like Animal Crossing. It doesn't mean you have to ruin their fun. And please, stop selling animals on eBay for $50 each. It's absolutely asinine.

You wanna see some die-hard sickening anti-time travel behavior? I watch a YouTuber named Optimus and he did a video where the first segement was dedicated to reading, uncensored I might add, a tweet thread from some AC Purist who might as well be the video game police. This Twitter user did everything except threaten to report time travelers to Nintendo to try and get them banned.

I don't time travel, and I certain don't care whether people do or don't. I just want to play the game and enjoy talking about the game and sharing multiplayer sessions with others.

I agree! I do think its funny when ppl headcanon Tom Nook and Redd as Exes tho!! But Blathers and Tom Nook is just perfect :D
The comics are funny but idekkkkkk,,, Tom should get away from Redd. I think my island rep would be the one with a rifle to shoo Redd off and not Tom for sure. Tom's not the type to get angry, he never even snaps at you for disturbing his sleep on the earlier version of AC. I just find it hard to imagine it. But I guess headcanons be headcanons. :)

There's little difference between those who rant and the very people this rant is about.

This so much! You bring forth the same type of energy which can make the community an uncomfortable place. Hostility helps no one.

I think you're the one who has a tone here. This topic has been really relaxed. Also, I think I do speak for most people who are sick of the drama and just want to play the game.

I have to agree with this. Of course there are exceptions, but when I see people overreacting to "fandom"-related stuff, they're usually minors. Black-and-white thinking is common when you're young, as is the likelihood of interpreting disagreements as vicious personal attacks and going overboard to defend yourself. I want to say most people grow out of it, but that's not necessarily true, so to OP and anyone else who's having a bad time, I'd honestly suggest finding some older players.

I realize that sounds kind of weird, telling kids to go play with adults specifically, but when I was younger and felt like my peers weren't mature enough, I sought out folks a few years older and, given that those people were well-adjusted individuals (which is the exact kind of person it can be hard to locate online, of course, lmao) I felt much better. You have to distance yourself from people who cause/perpetuate drama if drama is what drains you.

THIS. Every time I see someone stirring up drama over something petty and stupid in a fandom, they’re usually a teen. I also find that minors on the internet these days tend to be more entitled and dogmatic when it comes to asserting whatever they think the “right” or “correct” opinion is. They’re the ones that are going to be the bullies and the name-callers. As a rule, I find adult fans (20 somethings and older) to be way more chill and fun to hang out with, and that’s true for pretty much every fandom I’ve been in lately. Maybe it’s because we ‘older’ fans have been doing this for a while and are used to all the nonsense that can happen in a fandom. Or maybe it’s because we know that at the end of the day it’s all just for fun and none of it really matters.

this is a gross overgeneralization though, and both chill and crazy people can come in any age. This is just what I’ve observed lately. ✌

I actually just realized I still head-cannon. I like to think Roald and Aurora on my island are secretly hanging out in Aurora’s ice palace house together and nuzzling beaks to the tune of Stale Cupcakes.
