Hello!
So I have kind of a structured-but-natural mountain neighbourhood going on for my villagers, and in my opinion it looks great! I think it's cute and I'm very pleased with it. However, three of the houses are "built into" the cliff, so there are two small protruding cliffs on other side of the middle house / 1 on the right and left houses. It's a bit hard to describe so I'll add some photos!

I purposefully made them a size that I could fit a tree onto if I wanted, but I decided that I don't care for how the trees look. I also tried putting the tourist telescope on them but I didn't care for how they looked either. The other problem is that I feel the fence looks best cut off on those areas (almost like an entrance to the cliff) so the garden lanterns around it look more purposeful, and when the fence is fully across with no opening, they look lazily placed. But it would make no sense to have the fence open to those areas if there is nothing on them, even if it looks better!
I thought of doing a 1 square wide "brook" with a little waterfall going off the cliffs, but I like the trees that are placed in front of the cliff (on the layer below) and don't want to get rid of them or move them.
I was also thinking I could make a little path up to a tiny library at the end of the cliff but I won't know how that will look until tomorrow, or maybe some stone lion-dogs could "overlook" the village? I am open to all suggestions if anybody has any ideas! :)

If it helps, my town is a witchy / foresty town and it will not have any bamboo (except maybe some chopped bamboo still in the brown stage as I like that a lot), and most likely little to no intense Japanese influence (no hot springs or zen garden for example, but things like the tall lantern are fine!)

Thank you! :)

I have same problem with those and the one step wide cliffs. (they're so ugly!!)

You could try placing some flowers around the trees and see if that helps?

For the fence, you could either remove one piece of the fence either side and put your lanterns in it’s place so that the lanterns are the ‘end pieces’ or you could add another fence piece that goes vertical by facing towards the last piece to create a ‘T’ at the end, if you get what I mean. 😃

Looks great though! 👍 even the house exteriors match the forest vibe 🤩

Personally, I would just turn the trees into stumps until you get a nice "1 space" item. At the very least you should get witchy items from the Halloween event, I'm sure at least one could fit in there.

No helpful input as think it looks lovely as it is!! Hope you don't mind if I use that idea of building houses into cliffs? Looks awesome and would work perfect with my landscape :)

It's no problem!! Everything belongs to everyone in this community and sharing is important :)

Also thank you to everybody who is leaving suggestions, they're all great! c:

Maybe you could try a 1x1 table with a chair (facing the camera) and some flowers lining the cliff edge? You could put a different item on each table, like a teacup or a coffee mug, so it looks like a small community spot to relax.

First I agree with the person who thinks it looks fantastic now, but I understand wanting to try something different if you're personally not crazy about it. Specifically what about it isn't working for you? Was it because you wanted it to look like something people might actually walk out on to justify having a break in the fence there? Your stone dog idea sounds like a good solution.

I like the mossy rock suggestion someone had. There's the mossy stone tablet customization and also a mossy garden rock diy.

I love the wells in this game. There are two: simple well (2x2) and brick well (1.5x1.5). It might look odd to have three wells all lined up lol. Maybe a well or water pump (1x1) in the center row and something else for the other two?

There's the birdhouse (1x1). I live near this neighborhood irl where every house has a few birdhouses built in. It's actually really cool and unique. Kind of fits a witchy/natural theme.

If you want to go witchy/creepy rather than witchy/natural maybe scarecrow (1x1)?

Another possibility is a beekeeper hive (1x1). I just got a DIY for one and I haven't tried to build it yet, so I have no idea how it looks, but I love the idea of it! It might look cool in your natural mountain town. And probably look less weird to have a row of them than a row of water wells. Beekeeper hive would be natural-looking and something villagers would need a break in the fence to walk out to.

You could just go with the simple street light (1x1) at the end of each little cliff. Mine are black and would match your garden lanterns.

It's not super witchy or natural, but if your goal is a kind of unpolished/rustic forest look there's the utility pole you can buy for 1,000 miles. There's also a wind turbine for 4,000 miles. I have no idea how big those are, I haven't gotten either yet so it's possible they wouldn't even fit neatly into that space. I would assume the utility pole has is either 1x1 or 1.5x1.5, but the wind turbine looks like it could be wider.

Whatever you decide on, I'm sure it will look wonderful! Just based on the pics provided it's clear you have a good eye. I would love to see a screenshot of the end result if you feel inclined to post one:)

I think what's not working for me is that I chose not to give everyone a yard (to save space and also because I wanted to keep it pretty simple and clean!) so there is an abundance of trees and not much else. Because of this, I wanted to put some care into that area to give it more character! I have a well in an area I'm happy with nearby, and I also have plans for an area focused on the simple well elsewhere, so it would be a little much to add more but I still really love that idea!
I LOVE the idea of putting the bee houses there! I didn't even think of it, but it seems perfect, so thank you very much for that idea! c:

I will definitely share a photo with you once I get sorted!
Thank you everybody for the replies! :)

I personally like the idea of leaving the tree closest to the fencing, chopping the one closest to the cliff, and adding either mossy Tall Lanterns or other rock formations/tablets etc in their mossy versions where the old trees were.
It would make it look witchy and old imo as well as like you took the time to preserve the natural formations you found on your island which is a cool concept to me for a witchy theme!

can’t wait to see what you do though! There were tons of good idea here~

The beehive is adorable, and it is able to be customized, so you can make it fit better with your surroundings.

Here's mine, just against a fence, so you can see how it looks.
