How much do villager's interiors really matter to you when choosing villagers?

I usually don't bother with interiors. Hornsby's was kind of ugly, with literal thrash on the floor, but then I gave him plenty of cool stuff and now it isn't as bad (although he does seem to refuse to replace the original stuff, only adding more furniture instead.)

Slightly (un)related, does anyone know what happens to villagers with starter homes after they are adopted? Do they keep their four wooden furniture items and bare rooms?

I care way more about exteriors than I do interiors. Having a nice interior is always a nice treat for me, but it doesn't determine whether I let them live on my island or not.

I care. When I visit them, although not very common, I like having a nice house to be in. Some houses are dreadful, like Ankha's.

I wanted Chief as my cranky, but couldn't stand his house, so I took Wolfgang, who has a nice house.

I tend to care more about the villager themselves. Buzz, Sparro, and Phoebe all have really weird and questionable interior design choices, but I knew I wanted them in my town so I didn’t care. In fact, both Buzz and Phoebe’s interiors have grown on me a lot (especially Phoebs’ fiery death pit).

I end up gifting them so much that I'm not really bothered by their interiors.
I remember how messy my villagers houses got in new leaf from all the random gifts I'd give them!

I don't choose or avoid a villager specifically for their interior, but if I like villagers about equally then I look at the interior/exterior and catchphrase to see if one stands out

they don't bother me in general, the only thing that does bother me is the first 3 villagers having default homes. the lazy default house is literally hideous and I'm actually so glad I didn't find sherb on a mystery island despite how much I wanted him, looking back lol

I can’t be bothered with the interior or exterior. Usually I leave it as a surprise until they move in and then design them a nice yard fitting to their house exterior. The only thing that bugs me is the villagers placing gifted items on the goddamn floor instead of their table (looking at you Shari, placing the flower I gave you in a corner on the floor instead of your massive square table???)

I don't really care about their original interior but I do care about changing it by giving villagers gifts

It's not that I don't care but for me it's not a criteria to choose a villager, the most important is their actual character design and personality.
It's definitely a plus if I like their house though (interior and exterior), but I'm not picky with that, I think house's interiors just give more background and identity to the villager, you can understand their tastes better and even make a little back story in your head haha.

I don’t really mind that much. I more mind about the villager. Though, I can’t stand when i give villager clothes and they put them in their house. That’s when I consider giving them away because of their interior lol.

It matters to me. Although I care about their appearance and personality a lot more. But their interior can convince me to pick them over another villager I also like of the same personality.

I’ve hated Kid Cat’s interior in all games thus so far, but he’s one of my favourite villagers. I actually found it’s easier to give him new furniture because his house is such a dump anyways, whereas I feel like I try to preserve Marshal’s aesthetic because his house is tooooo nice.

They get their real interiors if they were one of your original five. Otherwise they’ll take some of what you gave with them.

I don't care one bit about interiors and exteriors. In fact I like making yards that compliment all these different styles of houses, it's fun. :'>

Mira has a super weird house interior (major downgrade from her house in New Leaf), but I still love her as a villager to bits so I don't mind her house that much.

Interiors dont matter that much to me, but maybe I'll think about it if I'm really undecided about someone. I do on the other hand take villager's exteriors into consideration when deciding if I want them on my island. But for my few must-have dreamies, I will accept them even if their exterior and interiors are horribly ugly.
